The AAZ and the ALH engines are the best diesels VW ever built. If the BEW didn't have issues with the cam lobes wearing flat, it would be the best.

Can confirm, the 1.9TDI is a great motor, my dad has one with almost 650,000k on the clock, its got some minor mods, tune, injectors, intercooler and an exhaust. made double the stock power and something stupid like 450nm (i cant remember fully) still going like no tomorrow. does about 80,000km a year that motor has never had an issue.

Other than the tendency for the camshaft lobes to wear out around 150K miles, the old pump induced diesels were one of the most solid engines by VW, really only outdone by the 2.0L 8V ABA engines (Affectionately known as the 2.0-slow in the business!) and other variants. At least, that's my opinion!

People that don't know much about engines love the W motors. The problem with are the connecting rods are so narrow to achieve the layout. Can't even get rod bearings for a W8 through the dealer anymore, you have to cut down wider bearings to fit.

The Volkswagen Group (VAG) has really made some good engines like the old 1.9 liter 130bhp engine (engine code AWX or AVF in VW Passats up to 2005/6) how goes very well indeed. They are a bit slow and rough when accelerating But quiet at a cruise. No DPF either in these cars. I'm sure more people will love the old VAG engines ...☺💪

There's so many great Volkswagen engines... I'm not even the biggest VW fan generally, but I really admire how they're always trying something different. You said VW is like a European GM and I agree with that, but IMO they're actually more like an early '60s GM rather than the GM of the current day.

But where is this classic 1.6 8v ? I know it's not that good like 1.9 tdi and it is slow (first versions were introduced in first Golfs and had 70 hp, the latest was in 6 generation of Golf and have 102 hp) but it is a petrol engine that have very good reability (not as that LEGENDARY 1.9 tdi but still). It was in Vw, Skoda,Audi,Seat cars.

Lots of misleading info on the air cooled engines. The 912 had a Porsche designed engine, not a vw type 1, the 914 had the type 4 aluminum engine as did the sp2. The sp1 had the "earlier" type 1 1.6l I believe. The 24 hp 1.1l engine didn't stop produced in 1959, it was much earlier, the 36hp 1.2l engine stopped production in 59 in the US market. 1.6 engines still have readily available parts. Honestly the beetle engines are crap though, 3 main journals and poor oil cooler placement leaves half the engine running hotter than the other. From the factory vw told you not to push them too hard on the highway. 100k miles per rebuild.

Andrew Samy aaaah so only this years cars count? Still after looking at the pictures it looks pretty dated, i can see a lot of design elements on a 12 year old mercedes for example. They catched up from the last 25 years of ugly interiors but still it looks dated compared to the german 3 or a Jaguar (were not getting into the exotics because it should be affordable)
