If you have the room, get the Fuerte, mine is around 75 years old and about 20-25ft wide & tall, it still gives great-tasting avocados here in Los Angeles.

I bought my 15 gallon Reed avocado from Louis‘s nursery back in March. It’s doing really well. Very very long drive for me from Thousand Oaks but I’m really happy with the Reed.. it still looks incredibly healthy and it probably almost doubled in size and just six months.

No doubt the best stocked nursery! But Lowes had my Pinkertons for 29.95, so bot two. I'm concentrating on one's I like and that do well here: 3 Pinkerton, 2 Reed, 2 Gwen, 1 1/2 GEM (GEM grafted to top of Sir Prize). With 20 trees and 16 varities all I want. Thx for the great videos.😆

I really like Lowe's too and you cannot beat the price at $29.95. Louie's is a bit expensive but they do have a lot of hard to find varieties. You and I have a lot of avocado trees and if we combine our tree we can start an avocado produce business:) I am also a big fan of the Pinkerton, Reed, Gwen and the Gem. Thank you for sharing Frank and thank you for watching!

@@kimhicks4781 Hi Kim: some great smaller avocado trees are Wurtz aka Little Cado (the one true dwarf avocado tree gets about 10') and the Holiday. There are other avocado trees on the smaller/mid size trees like the GEM and Reed that are great too! Thanks for subscribing and thank you for watching!

@@johnnysworld-backyardorchard Thanks for your reply. I'm trying to learn more before I buy. I really wanted a Gem as my first choice but after viewing different videos I learned Gem leave grit on the Avaçado from cutting it. Now I am questioning it and thinking of a Reed. I like that Read is narrow and branches hang down to protect fruits. A lot of people say if you only have one get a Reed. I have 3 seeds planted in one pot for several years. They are healthy and starting to grow brown bark from bottom up. May just graft some different varieties on them. Have had to cut them back to keep under two feet. It would be nice to see if they would fruit on their own but takes to long a wait. Seeds were Hass from Mexico. I picked seeds that were small in hopes to get small trees. So much to learn about Avacados. My mother had a seed planted 30 years from a Fuerte. It eventually had blooms but no fruit. Didn't know it needed an A pollinator at the time. Tree was shaded by a large elm tree. Instead of wide branches it grew up with one trunk about 12 feet tall or so and not too wide with nice structure. A real pretty tree with a lot of mulch from the elm tree. The soil was clay but didn't seem to bother it.

@@kimhicks4781 Hi Kim: Thank you for sharing your avocado experience! I definitely like the Reed and in fact it may be my favorite of all avocado trees. It grows pretty straight and it is a good looking tree too and many people use it liked a hedge too. Good luck with your search of your avocado tree!

Be sure if you buy a 15 gallon avocado tree, to use a new post when you plant it. The posts that come with them have been in soil long enough to have rotted some and in a strong wind it can break off at the base and can take the tree with it. I know from experience. What a loss it was.

Hi Johnny I'm considering getting atleast one Avocado tree. I'm in Zone 9a southern Mississippi gulf coast withing 3 miles to the gulf. I'm wondering if I get a small tree should I up pot it for a year or two before I put it in the ground? I know I'll need a cold hardy variety but the temps still dip pretty low here on occasion for very small trees. Would you keep it potted or go right into the ground and just tent it on the occasional very cold nights and days? Thanks in advance. Planting more fruit trees and some grapes as soon as my order comes in😁👍 !!!

Hi Craig, I am really impressed when people grow avocado trees in areas where it does get colder. We have it pretty easy here. I think it would be easier growing it in a container so you can bring into a warmer shelter like a green house when it gets cold. Wishing you success!

@@johnnysworld-backyardorchard I have been watching the Millennial Gardner's chanel and he is farther north than I am . He is in zone 8 but I would do the same thing. Build a little PVC frame around it and cover it with a frost cloth when it gets cold and keep it pruned back. He wraps his with Christmas lights and turns them on when it's cold out and keeps the inside warm. I would do that and probably hang a drop light and a heat build in it just for the few hours of extreme cold. It usually doesn't go below 20 down here and it doesn't stay there for long. He hand pollinates his but I think I would get one maybe this coming year and then another to plant close by and tent it too. It's alittle work but the saving you reap along with all those beautiful fruits😁👍 !!!

@@johnnysworld-backyardorchard I'm also considering getting a Carabao mango which would take a lot more protection but that's the closest native to the Philippines mango you can find here and in my opinion the very best sweetest mangos. The wife and I are them all the time when I lived with her on Negros island . She loves the green avocadoes as well but not completely sure if they are the same species👍😁 !!!
