Visiting Alaska's Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

Sitting on the edge of Alaska, an 8-hour drive from Anchorage, are the 13.2 million acres that make up Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. The park contains an active volcano, nine of the 16 highest peaks in America and countless glaciers, as well as the last community inside a national park. Jeff Glor reports.

this past summer...been there, did that, loved it. camped in the campground, drove the 50 miles to the bridge, biked to McCarthy and had pizza at the Potato, biked to Kennicott, then hiked to the glacier and hiked it, ...it is a great place, as is all AK.

I've kayaked from Seattle to Skagway, AK twice and my second trip I paddled up 3 of the fjords to tidewater glaciers. There is nothing like SE AK for scenic beauty, wildlife sightings, and awesome primitive camping.

I'm from AZ and when I see so much clear, beautiful water I wish there was a way to get the water to the western states. I expect trolls to say we are overpopulated in the west... Blah blah blah. The fact is California is the 5th largest economy in the world. It feeds a huge portion of the USA.

It doesn't have to be the 5th largest economy. It could have been the 20th largest economy. Who cares? 5th largest economy comes at the expense of destroying so much open space, too much traffic, pollution, many species have dwindled in #s. Is that what you makes you feel proud? 5th largest economy. What is next? You want California to be the 1st largest economy ?

Suggestion: Come on up and visit McCarthy, the only town of significance within the Park, and see how folks live. In spite of the abundance of water, little of it is wasted. Actually, little of almost anything is wasted. There is no grid that conveniently lets people waste electricity for AC or heating, most people 'haul' their water or pump it into tanks on their p.u. beds from as yet unpolluted streams near town, many utilize self-dug 'root cellars' to keep food stuff fresh year round (the average root cellar maintains a temp. of around 39ºF summer & winter). Of course they lack the luxuries that most SW states offer, like golf courses, swimming pools, manicured lawns and irrigation systems which continually draw down aquifer levels until it's all gone.
