We have an auto recycling business near where I live and it used to look like this boat yard. Just an big unorganized mess. Then they started organizing things. Now, many years later they have almost eliminated all the cars on the land. They did this by building a mechanics area with lifts and bays just like a car dealership has. They haul the cars in, strip the parts, check the parts for function and label and store any usable parts in a warehouse. The rest of the car is sold for scrap. That's what this guy needs to do. Strip the boats of usable parts and warehouse them, then shred the unusable hulls. The trailers could all be sold as is or refurbished and sold.

For people who are wondering, small boats, especially in the under 25’ range are a dime a dozen in SE Michigan where this place is. Autoworkers in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s could easily afford to take out loans and buy these types of boats. The problem comes up with trying to maintain and store a boat up north - lots of wrecked engines and since fiberglass has no value like the metal in a scrap car, the cheapest thing to do sometimes is just abandon them anywhere you can when people realize the true expense of boating. It’s sad this place is so disorganized - lots of windshields and hatches need replacing every spring from the weight of snow on storage covers, most of those trailers are aluminum and could be rehabbed - but this place is such a mess it’s not worth the effort when you can find junked boats all over in Michigan.

I don't understand why they do not recycle all those rotten boats. Many of them sure arrived there in pretty good condition. What a shame they were not fixed in time, before they turned to wrecks. Mate, from a guy from Australia, so many dream boats in their day, would be millions in costs. Wonder what brought each boat to its death, except the fire ones, would it of been high fuel costs for large inboards? Or mechanical costs to repair? Such a shame to see so many boats degrading, here in Australia, most of those boats would still be a going concern. Anyway mate, this video opened my eyes. Cheers.

It amazes me that boat salvage is go far behind auto salvage and recycling. Fiberglass can and should be recycled as this is the most environmentally friendly option. Fiberglass hulls can be recycled by breaking the hull down and melting it to be used again in producing new products. Shredding: The fiberglass is broken down into smaller pieces, often through shredding or grinding. Washing: The shredded fiberglass is washed to remove any contaminants or impurities. Melting: The cleaned fiberglass is melted down in a furnace or kiln. Molding: The melted fiberglass is poured into a mold and allowed to cool and harden. Finishing: The molded fiberglass is trimmed and finished as needed. Common uses: Insulation: Recycled fiberglass can be used to make new insulation products. Automotive parts: Recycled fiberglass can make various automotive parts, including body panels, spoilers, and hoods. Boatbuilding: Recycled fiberglass can be used to repair existing boats. Construction: Recycled fiberglass can make structural elements such as beams, columns, and panels. Industrial products: Recycled fiberglass can make various industrial products, including tanks, pipes, and ducts.

If you don't have great mechanical abilities, a boat is gonna cost a fortune. Most of the outdrive boats were probably tossed because some kind of major repair or repower problem that would cost more than the resale value of the boat or the small amount of pleasure the owner was seeing verses the investment to fix it. I repowered 5 out of 7 boats that I owned over 4 decades, saving me countless thousands of dollars. We used to blow OMC V4 115-140hp blocks every summer, practicing for AWSA tournament competitions. We sleeved cylinder 4, and every year that piston could not withstand the relentless 6500rpm hole shots, pulling skiers up and out. We had it down. We could take the powerhead off, replace the piston rod, and rings, and the next day we're back on the slalom course, beating the engine some more. I can't imagine all the money I would've dished out to mechanics if I couldn't do it all myself

90% of those boats are in there due to improper winterization guaranteed. Every spring there's a ton of boats for sale with cracked blocks here in Michigan. Some really nice ones with ruined engines. Just most of the time its too much cost and hassle to replace the engine. You can buy another used boat by the time you are done.

When I was young and still a student living with my parents ( the Netherlands) I bought my first boat. great running outboard. new under it's hood but the tale section had grown a long beard from sitting in sweet water. also the interior was partly waste since the cover had not been covering well and cought al lot of water making it almost sink. It was just a little 4,2mtr back to back four seater with a 40 hp yamaha. stripped it down completely and reupholstered and replaced all backing wood. added carpet and new meters. few years later bought a new 40 hp 3cyl with trim and made myself a mini campercanvas. Windshield broke in 30 pieces one day so made a new one myself too. looked pretty good when I was done. It was like new and had it for 17 years. But it was worth it because I had lot's of time and saw it as a hobby. So diving into a project like you see here is even worse I think because you probably have to replace engine ( Frozen and cracked or just internal rust amd corrosion in cylinders and carbs.) floors and maybe even the drives. Only thins that survives is the fiberglass. that will probably buff out and shines like new. But all used wood in stringers will be rotten and takes a lot of effort to replace. floatation foam will be soaked. And all parts and materials needed will also cast a fortune all together these days. So, don't think it makes real sense to start a project like that. Unless you only shop for bargains and have a lot of spare hobby time. Then maybe it makes sense.

I think the yard owner is/was at some time buying alot of salvage boats from insurance auctions, and they also were buying from tow impounds. These kind of buys are usually 10 percent of retail, hence the large quantity. This would explain why so many of these long gone boats have trailers under them. Videos like this make my sad, I imagine a time when these boats were new, and a young family just bought them. The kids were young, and the owners whole family would go to the lake on the weekend. So sad to see a whole graveyard of boats that were once loved. Someone could sell the MerCrusier core engines and make a nice little chunk of change.
