Visiting Fukuoka and Eating Some of Japan's Best Foods

In this video I visit Hakata, Tenjin, Nakasu, Dazaifu, Yanagawa, Mojiko and Yukuhashi, and eat some of the best Japanese food in Fukuoka. This is where my life in Japan started - Yukuhashi, Fukuoka.

Haha, that story at the end reminded me of when I was young. I´m German and in Germany legal drinking age for beer and wine is 16 and hard booze is 18. I went to Cologne with a friend and we went to famous pub where they never asked for ID and just brought you what you ordered. My friend and me were 14 at the time got drunk on beer and hard booze and then suddenly a teacher of us came in and she was like, "he guys what are you doing here?" We were like, "oh ahh... just drinking some beer" and trying to hide the harder booze glasses. She was laughing and saying, "yeah right... don´t overdue it guys!" Good old times back then!

haha wow so lenient! In the U.S., it’s so strict… people in their 40s and 50s get asked for ID still lol

Such a great video Barrett! It was great to see a different part of Japan through your personal experience. It reminds me of going home to Hawaii were I really just want to eat at the little hole in the wall places that are nostalgic. One thing I was wondering was what was the place called "Haleiwa Kitchen" next to Kanadaya? That surprised me when I saw it. I looked up Kanadaya and saw they had locations in London so I recommended it to my friend who is visiting there now! Anyway great video as always!

Thanks! Yeah, eating at those kinds of places are the best huh! I noticed that Haleiwa Kitchen as well, it wasn't there when I was living there. It seemed like "Japanese Hawaii food" but I probably would've gone if I had the option haha. Kanadaya seems pretty popular in London... I want to try it just to see the difference!

Thanks for this nice tour of Fukuoka! The food looked great, although not sure if I would like raw horse meat, but I'd like to try it. We are planning on visiting Fukuoka this fall. It's only a 90 minute flight from my home here in Okinawa. Are you planning on staying in Japan permanently? Take care!

Thank you! Yeah it took me quite a while before I tried that as well, but I think it's pretty good now. Nice. I'm not actually... hopefully I can go back and forth but we'll see!

Yeah for sure, I just wish I had more time! It's hard to spend time on photos and videos when we're traveling only for a short period unfortunately.

Great video. I could really feel your historical narration and top fave spots as this is what I am looking for; being somewhat your age with similar interests. I was surprised you did not show any beach at all. Is that because Japanese people don't care much about it? My family is in Sapporo and it is not so popular there obviously but what about Fukuoka? Right now I am split between Sapporo, Nagano and Fukuoka for settling with my wife and kids... Tough one. Also I heard there are many typhoons.. I wonder if people there are more or less welcoming and cheerful than other prefectures. Hope I won't regret not installing there in the future as I love beach and city :)

Sorry for the late reply. To be honest, I didn't go to the beach often in Fukuoka. I only went once or twice. Most people don't go that often, I don't think, and even though I'm originally from Hawaii, I don't go often either. Sapporo, Nagano and Fukuoka are hard to choose from, they're all pretty desirable places! Fukuoka does have its fair share of typhoons though, and that causes a lot of landslides and flooding, unfortunately. I think Fukuoka people are generally pretty positive and friendly though. I'm obviously biased because I lived there but I think it's a really great place to live.

Never thought of Fukuoka that way and now it's on my list to visit…how many days did you spend visiting all those cities? Any hotel recommendations? Thanks for sharing your story with us…

If you like Japanese food, you should like it! For this trip we were only there for 4 days. Ideally we'd stay longer and go to places in Nagasaki or Kagoshima or something. Kyushu is kind of big so it takes time... We stayed at the Mitsui Garden Hotel Fukuoka Nakasu. It's right across The Lively which we chose over because we heard the rooms are quite small. The location is good, it's about a 10-15 min walk to Tenjin (subway is an option too) where you can catch the train to Dazaifu or Yanagawa. I'll have to update my blog about this kind of stuff haha. Thanks for the video. We’ll be visiting Fukuoka this Fall. Which hotel location should we choose, those near Hakata Station or the ones in Tenjin?

Awesome, thanks for watching! You’ll be fine with either Hakata or Tenjin. Hakata is a major transportation hub and will have the most trains going in and out of Fukuoka City. Tenjin has more attractions (at least for me, personally) and they have trains going to other areas like Yanagawa which was in the video. I tend to favor Tenjin but it depends on what your plans are and what you want to do. Both are on the main subway line that goes to the airport. Hakata is only a couple stations away and Tenjin is about 3 more, I think.

Other than the typical, it’ll probably be wisteria season. I haven’t been personally for whatever reason but Kawachi Wisteria Garden near Yahata in Kitakyushu is popular.
