Today I'm taking a trip in the mountains of North Carolina to historic downtown Sylva with a bonus trip to Judaculla rock. Nestled in the heart of the western NC mountains, Main Street offers an array of shopping, dining, lodging, and history. Judaculla rock contains ancient carvings and petroglyphs that are over 1,000 years old. Come with me as I walk around and explore this little mountain town, as well as witness a piece of history at Judaculla rock!
Located off US-74 in Jackson County, downtown Sylva is about an hour's drive from Asheville NC.
www.mainstreetsylva.org/
Judaculla Rock is located about 20 minutes south of Sylva a few minutes off of NC-107.

My uncle left the army and married a Sylva native. They lived up on the hill up on top of Spring St. and had a beautiful view of the old courthouse from the back porch and a basset hound named Moose. I visited twice in the 1990s as a kid and teenager. Glad to see City Lights is still in business 25 years later.

I really enjoyed this. I go to Cherokee fairly often and I love driving to Bryson City and the surrounding towns to film as well.

I remember staying at the Blue Ridge Inn in 1988 with my parents on the way to Pigeon Forge. For some reason, I thought we had stayed in Franklin, but I vividly remember the courthouse. I found out the other day it was actually Sylva. It’s nice to see the whole town and the motel is just as nice as it was back then!

Yes the downtown area seems to be quite popular with newer restaurants, microbreweries, shopping, and the existing mainstays like the Blue Ridge Inn you mentioned. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed!

Really nicely done! I lived and worked in Sylva back in the 80's at the local radio station WRGC-AM. Absolutely loved living there and hoping I can return in retirement. You put together a good video. You have a nice, friendly voice, make interesting comments, and your filming visuals are excellent!

Leaving Sylva headed for the Judacalla Rock you pass by WCU and its Mountain Heritage Center, which is on the college campus. A visit is worth your time. Personal aside: wife and I courted there before all the buildings came. She lived on top of a mountain overlooking the old campus where for years you could start first grade (the college owned the local public school - it was right in the middle of the old campus)and , you could graduate with a masters degree in due time. Your school memories would all be in one place.

Love the area there....Sylva, Dillsboro.😍 I come in by them when I come up, going to Cherokee. Really neat area, and not as expensive and crowded as Highlands and Cashiers🙄 Fantastic job on the vlog and Judaculla Rock🤩 Thanks for that wonderful adventure🐾🦊🐺

Man, you are really got this video thing down. Great, informative video. I guess we have a new town to check out the next time we come down. As far as what the petroglyphs say, being the rock is close to Asheville, I’d imagine it translates to “Buy Local”. Again great video!

Very nice little town Mr. Mountain Man and a very nice job showing us around. You are really getting great with your editing of these and making them look very professionally done. I even shared this on my facepages. Great video MMM, really enjoyed it! That was a really nice veterans memorial in town. Beautiful area and nice walkway around the rock as well.

Sylva looks like a nice town .I think I would like to stay at the Blue Ridge Inn while visiting the area. I would try some of the cafes and check out the Dixie & Co. Market for sure. That is a heck of a lot of steps up to the courthouse, but what a nice view of the town and of the mountains. You need to go back in the fall and give us a video from the courthouse when the leaves are in full color. Maybe you can drive around to the back of the courthouse and not have to climb the steps .The area at Judaculla Rock does look like Cades Cove. That is interesting information about Judaculla and the rock. It would be great to know what the petroglyphs are telling.

Lived in the Franklin, Highlands NC area for 8 yrs. The walkway wasn't there and there was a 'roof' over the rock. Sometimes we saw chalk outlines on the rock where people from Duke University were studying it

In my mind I think maybe this is a map of a burial ground and the paths, roads if you will, divide the plots of families. The dots represent the graves, the smaller the dot, the younger and the larger dots would be older or heads of clans. These "families" are further designated by the shapes or figures that mark each individual family area. Generations of one family would be added with arms or paths in that family or clan's plot. You can see rather large stones, boulders or rocks scattered nearby.

That's a fantastic hypothesis about Judaculla rock! For sure it was some type of documentation or communication, and it's interesting to wonder exactly what it was saying. Thanks for watching!

What a nice little town MMM. I liked how you ran up the stairs at the Courthouse 🤣 I wish it had been opened as I bet the architecture inside was cool. I enjoy window shopping as that I can afford. As always, thanks for the maps! That Judaculla rock area was certainly interesting!! Aren’t there people that study petroglyphs to be able to understand what they state? There were some petroglyphs around Tucson we would hike to sometimes. I always pray the idiots that graffiti never damage them. Very enjoyable MMM. Thank you! Be safe.
@MrMountainMan

I didn't even think about vandalism of the rock, but you're right I hope that never happens! A lot of people study them, but from what I read they aren't fully sure what it means. Thanks for all the great feedback, and glad you enjoyed it!

Hey Mr Mountain man....what would you say are the nicest small towns in W NC around this area with good mountain biking? Places that are more upscale and nice downtowns? How is Clyde and WAynesville compared to Sylva? Thinking of staying out there for a month to go mountain biking but my wife is a little bougie and likes nice stuff. She liked Blowing Rocks and Banner Elk but I want to be closer to Pisgah. Any recommendations?
