This week Eva gets unstuck from Vermont and travels to Cape Cod in Massachusetts to explore the home of author Edward Gorey. Also known as the Elephant House, the prolific illustrator lived there from 1986 until his death in 2000 and it is open to the public from April to December. People travel from all over the world to Yarmouth Port to take a closer look at the work of this beloved artist and his funky home. Eva is a long time fan and was thrilled to get a personal tour with curator Gregory Hischak.
Shooting date: 8/27/18

I just started reading Mark Dery's book on Gorey, Born to be Posthumous. This is a fascinating addition to my Gorey journey.

Ed used to work as a volunteer at the local community cable channel when i was there in the mid 1990's. Other people who worked there were somewhat amazed that this famous author would spend his time there. I somehow got in a short conversation with him once before i left working as a volunteer also. I didn't really know how famous he was which was probably a good thing. Just seemed like a nice guy, very unassuming. Unfortunately i can't remember what we talked about.

what a great tour, so much so that I wish we could do it again a lot slower. I want to see more of whats on the shelves, more of the old photos and hear more of the stories of his life and his collections, his cats. Please do another!

Saw it last week….it really doesn’t feel like the home of anyone, let alone Edward Gorey…it’s been scrubbed clean of his furnishings, books, clutter, etc and instead, glass cases of his works are the main event. It’s like a giant gift shop. You can’t even see the upstairs where he did his artwork… sad that they did not take any pains to preserve the home the way he left it, which would be far more interesting than leaving a tv set up in the living room with endless re-runs of the opening of PBS Mystery…we are already familiar with his work, we come to ‘see’ the man…what he surrounded himself with, what inspired him, how he lived… if you visit Val-kill, the home of Eleanor Roosevelt, it looks as if she has just stepped out of the room for a cup of tea…this one looks as if they are getting ready for a new tenant.

According to Google, Edward Gorey died at the Emergency Center at Cape Cod Hospital in Barnstable, MA.

My understanding is that Gorey had a heart attack in his home and then was taken to the hospital where he died.

A curator should have much more respect for Gorey’s belongings…this museum resembles a large gift shop far more than it does the intimate home of this quirky artist. So much of the contents are gone…his books, furnishings, etc…can’t even see the studio where he created his art. We visited last week…such a disappointment. Sad.

@@maryf259 I'm very sorry you didn't enjoy your visit. I found Gregory (our curator 2 years ago) to be incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and very accommodating. As the house itself, in typical Cape Cod style, is not very large, keeping any additional furnishings above what they have done would be... cumbersome, and would leave very little room for visitors to move around. The actual gift shop area is very small in comparison to the size of the house. IMHO the Elephant House has done an excellent job of exhibiting as much of his art and eclectic collections as possible, and the limited space allows fans to get up close to every exhibit. They also manage to do something quirky and fun each year... when we went, it was a scavenger hunt for the Gashlycrumb Tinies. Perhaps someday the upstairs rooms will be open for visitors as well, but it does take money to refurbish and maintain. This is a good reminder to me to renew my membership, so thanks.

I'm curious: is there a copy on display of the album "One False Move" by Cape Cods Punk Rock legends The Freeze. Edward Gorey and Freeze front man, Clif "Hanger" Croce...collaborated lyrically on one of the song's. Unique, talented individuals!

At the moment, the Freeze material that the Edward Gorey House has is not on display. That will be for a future exhibit.

Object lessons were a teaching method popular in the Victorian era, where an example of a physical object is used when teaching facts and speculation about that class of object. Perhaps you are not avoiding the the delusion that delusions are avoidable?

2:25 That lower right illustration looks more like an homage to John Kenn Mortensen, not Gorey.
