I don’t know how old I was when I first went to Olvera street, but I was a little girl. My dad is born and raised in East Los Angeles. Anyway, I tried some awesome taquitos from a street vendor with a thin green sauce. I never had anything like it. My dad’s mom was Mexican-Indian and she married an Irish man that emigrated from Belfast, Ireland with his family, due to the “Irish potato famine”. They had eleven children and my grandma stayed in that three-bedroom house until the day she died. I unfortunately never got to meet my grandpa, as he died of prostate cancer, just like Huel (R.I.P).

One of the older programs - 1994. My man looks healthy and young ... but then, he looked that way until he left us too soon. Anyway, I love Olvera Street. I can only assume it's as nice now as it was 30+ years ago when I lived in LA (and when this was taped!). Not mentioned here is that Olvera Street, or as it was known during the Silent Film era, Wine Street, was featured in Chaplin's "The Kid" and in a number of silent films in the Teens and early 20s.

Christine Sterling ! Thank you, thank you for your contribution in restoring a little piece of my Mexico! I recently visited la placita Olvería with my hija and her boyfriend . As we stepped into the plaza I said to them " ""your about to enter a time machine """ ! That's what it is ! It's a little part of Mexico...thank you Christine Sterling ! We got there at 3pm...by the time we made it to the adove house it was closed 😭...they closed at 4pm..but we enjoyed the rest so so much.

This was an great video. It’s beuitiful time capsule of the early 90s . I grew up in Los Angeles and only visited Olvera plaza once. My last name is Avila, so now I feel I need to go back and see the Avila adobe house with my family. Thank you for uploading this.

Visited Olvera street many times as a child, many memories of the mariachi and watching dancers in the square. I saved every penny for years to purchase a set of wooden string puppets from a vendor there. I also had a cherished tiny glass cat from a man there who would blow glass right in his booth. Toured the tortilla factory on a field trip as well.

❤2012 to 2020. I worked in jeffersonville indiana, Shepardville Kentucky , Mishawaka indiana elkhart Indiana and waxahacie texas. The weather, the people and brick buildings It was an experience. Southern culture is totally different then California culture. I learned about Duke of hazard flag and KKK. I didn’t know the history. Never do that again.. 😂😂😂

I wonder if the scumb@g who was scamming tourists with ( I just need $5 more to get a haircut for my job interview) is still grifting there, I caught him on the way back telling others the same story, so I hit him up for the 20 I gave him (like an id!ot), lol! Haven't been back since, but it used to be packed on the weekends, I can't imagine what it looks like now with all the bums camping out all over downtown LA. But that restaurant and the opposite one (downsteps) were pretty good.
