Fusion is not open source, but has a free plan, though a great piece of software, :)

it's now in davinci resolve since version 15, i think. and there is a complete, fully functional version of resolve which is free.

Sure.. Ure right. Open source simply means it has a wide community of developers who can add more to the program. In terms of plug ins and other resources. The software is not locked to the main developer. Free software on the other hand simply means it's free to download and no payments required for and no need for any activation of licensing. In the nutshell, a free app may not be open source. An open source app may not be free

@Vincent Aziati Not exactly. Open source means the full source code is publicly available and licensed such that downloading, modification, and republishing of the source code or builds of the apps are unrestricted (given inclusion of proper license acknowledgements and often not charging for redistributions or variants)- inherently making it free. A dev can download the source code and build it themselves and have a free copy. And in lieu of free official builds, there's little stopping a dev from posting builds with or without their own modifications online. You initial description of open source would include things that have extensive plugin support but don't reveal the entire source code- such as Unity or Maya. Those tools are definitely *not* open source and are often a thorn in my side- Unity is notorious for having serious bugs that Unity Technologies is very slow to fix. I've spent weeks working around bugs in Unity that could've been fixed in a few hours if I had access to the source code and could just fix the bugs myself. Open source software does not have that problem- if you are stuck on a bug and have the skill to fix it yourself, you have nothing blocking you from getting your work done.

Don't forget Unreal Engine 4 which makes the Quixel Suite free and connects to Unreal. It's a game engine but can be used for a lot of this. Someone made a shortfilm in Unity, also

I’m not sure, but I think that there’s a plugin named Gaffer for Blender, which serves the purpose of easy lighting and managing lights in a Blender scene. And then there’s also the Completely different software named Gaffer, which is not what is shown in the video.

Don’t use ms paint. It’s very tedious to use and also will create ugly artifacts because it doesn’t have anti aliasing and feathering. Also working with only one layer is very risky if you’re don’t have backups. Working in vfx job in TV shows I have some experience with keying. In my opinion Keylight plugin in After effects gives the best results. Make sure to light the green screen evenly. And keep the subject little bit away so no green reflections is created. Also try to flatten the shadow. And don’t use green screen for green object like trees or something use a red screen instead. Use a black screen for transparent objects.(black just go away if you put the layer on screen mode)

It's nice you enumerated them, but for a beginner, the terms used are pretty high-level, it would have been nicer if you could have masticate the info yourself and present only a comparison info to us about these software apps, or just a summary of what they can do, in a more accessible terminology. But nevertheless, you named your clip "visual effects software open source" so you are not obliged by your title to provide what I said, maybe another "comparing visual effects software open source" clip would be needed for that. Anyways, I liked your clip, gave you thumbs up, but couldn't be very useful for me, other than just have the list of ten open-source video 2D and 3D compositing software on the industry. The list itself is valuable, thanks !

@@SurajGupta_3D not true... In the states 80 percent of the jobs went overseas so the studios could sate the fiscal appetites of greedy actors and directors ...but what the heck, judging by your name, I bet that you are one of those who benefited from the mass exodus of VFX jobs from the states.

Number 2 you are not providing better quality as much of the compositing work coming out of Asia has to be reaccomplished at studios in Canada and the UK... as fe getting better...that is not possible...nor feasible as I'm independently wealthy and retired. Im kust sixk of our crooked government allowing studios to farm out work to dirtbags like you so. By the way, you may want to give a damn as we are pushing legislation to tax films that are predominantly ptoduced out of country. This will make it cost prohibitive for the studios to release movies on the states. Many here in the states have boycotted the film industry. Either way, most things are available online and the studios dint get a dime of their blood money.

there are people right now using 2015 maya and 3dsmax. Development is important and eventually, if natron doesn't get support, it'll be fazed out of existence, but right now it has the tools to be a considerable option.

The Gaffer shown in the video is not the Gaffer 3D is talking about. He talk about Image Engine Gaffer HQ and put video from a not well build Blender version called Gaffer. The real Gaffer is here : www.gafferhq.org/

You don't want to edit videos in Blender, trust me. Use the free version of Davinci Resolve for video editing instead. It's much better for this task and it includes colour grading tools, too.

@@Marvin-dc9rz Blender now supports color grading tools. I think it really depends on what you need to edit and how complicated the edit is. I find that Blender has the fastest UI of any video editing software that I've used, but really it is not ideal for anything about 24 fps.

Thank you for the Nuke non-commercial info, I've been meaning to have a go at their software for years now and even visited their website a few times only to be put off by the price. Somehow I totally missed this non-commercial version - such a great idea!

Nuke non-commercial has a lot of restrictions unfortunately at least on linux, haven't tried Flame, though the direction Autodesk is heading is quite mehh

@@lawrencedoliveiro9104 if you're referring to Nuke - I don't think anyone is expecting a fully fledged free version of Nuke or anything other than 'freeware' as you call it with the non-commercial version. It's just for people like me who are willing to miss out on certain features but want to get the feel of the software without buying a license that they may never use.

tbh. Blender is the best choice but its sad how Blender cannot run in my laptop or any Laptops. It only runs in a powerful computer with large GPU.

Blender is missing one must have and fundamental tool: Linking file formats such as .fbx, .dae, .obj, .cad, .3dm, .3ds, etc.......

Fusion is not open source, by this logic any free and / or non-commercial version of VFX software, tool or plugin could be on your list. At least that list would make sense since ACES, Alembic, OPENVDB, USD are not even software nor tool or plugin.

Fusion is not open-source software. You're mixing up free (as in freedom) software like Blender with freeware (software, where the user is granted a no-cost license to use the software, but the source code, patents, and full control over the software remains in the hands of it's proprietor).
