But people did that with computers for almost a century or more. There are just some cases where the technology is so advanced, we can't even imagine uses for it. I don't think it was a specific type of camera. I think it was an experiment, like a one off. Reading the document, I'm also convinced that what we see in the videos is not "real" but is based on the information that is captured and then rendered. The whole thing is called "computational photography" too.

Are you sure you understand the full picture of the light traveling from an object to the eye? The light source emits the light, then it "bounces" against the target, travels from the target to the camera, then the camera records the image. It's pretty simple...
