Professor Holick is awesome, he makes the subject easy to understand and listen to. Just wish this message was getting out there more, as it has such implications to human health.

Dr Holick is awesome, both his knowledge and his presentation skills. His book "The Vitamin D Solution" is an excellent reference. People with any condition should look into adding a daily dose of 4,000 - 5,000IU per day to their vitamin regime. Remember that most agricultural soil is depleted of vitamins and minerals, and most food is now irradiated, so you need to take supplements. Some food is lacking in as much as 90% vitamin potency compared to 30 years ago.

This presentation is incredible, I just had to come back and watch it again. I love the way he just BOMBARDS you with facts and relevant information; even going as far as to address counter claims with counter evidence. This is something I can listen to and watch without feeling like I have to shout at the screen- "Come on! Speak faster, say something of substance".

Dear PZ, Dr. Holick stated that cancer fighting starts at 60ng/ml, over 100 is observed in normal healthy people that get sun, 200 is toxic to no one, the only known toxic reaction in journal was 1,000,000 IU/day, 500+ in the blood, the chemical reaction is two way and self-limiting, that 5000 IU are metabolized daily... I am sharing my personal facts & observations in an effort to help others save themselves from D deficiency, which I know from direct experience can be serious and devastating.

I tanned for one winter in a tanning bed 5 min every day,. That winter I did not get sick ONCE, next winter skipped tanning...never had been more chronically sick in my life. That winter I got two types of flues and multiple sinus infections.

I take 8000 IU/day all year to reach a measured 77 ng/ml blood serum 25-hydroxy D. 8000 IU/day is, therefore, not enough.

I have been using one in my den for nearly a year. So far no adverse effects. It is right over my head during the winter about 1.5 m away. Compared with the sun, these bulbs put out low levels of UVB, so I am not expecting serious issues.

Do you recommend taking Calcium Carbonate or a Magnesium supplement too to help your intake for Vitamin D deficient? I had my gall bladder removed, my BMI is a bit higher than 30, and since then have barely any cholesterol good or bad, lower calcium, lower B12, lower iron, and vitamin d of 19.5 (April 2016) the last time with taking 1,000 IU 3-4 x / week for 6 months. My last showed 25 in Sep 2015. I do have very fair skin and live in the Midwest. I'm not sure how long I have been deficient in vit D, but I never had these other issues. (March 2015 I tested 20 and brought my levels to only 25 in Sept 2015 up getting sun at least 1x per day during 10am-3pm and taking a 1,000 IU every other day). I wanted to have a magnesium and calcium panel done separate, since if I cannot absorb these or good fats, I cannot absorb enough vitamin D no matter the amount I took. I do not have high bp or glucose. i changed to a plant based diet this past year and also take B12 dis solvable tablets and a vegan prenatal vitamin (even though I am not pregnant). I forgot to mention, I did not present stones and it took docs 4 year to diagnose my gallbladder issues. It was functioning at 17% when taken out. Also, I still have a hiatal hernia, acid reflux , and bile reflux. I stopped taking PPI's and try to do a natural approach, like eating plant based, not over eating, cutting out alcohol, soda, dairy, meat, other triggering foods. Sleeping on a angle when necessary and not going to bed on a full stomach. I have extreme fatigue, weak muscles, nerve / muscle pain everyday, headaches , depression, problems sleeping. Please help! -Laura

The best presentation by far!!! I suspected my symptoms of joint and muscle pain could be improved by taking decent supplements as I won't take medications but pain killer as and when. I have ordered my vit D3 with K2...I wish I understood the importance of vit D sooner, as I may have avoided this past year with health scares!!!

2011- australia 1 in 4 vitamin Deficient . More than 40% of Aussies are victim D deficient- this wouldn’t surprise me - I asked an ignorant arrogant gp to test my daughters vitamin D / he looked at her snd said , no we don’t test that . she doesn’t look like she needs one and said to my daughter in such a derogatory tone “ if you think you need vitamin D take some “. Damn fool I realised later he was seeing her fake tanned proof she don’t need vitamin D… never went back to him . And yes we found out later she was deficient

The moment this man said morning sun is dangerous should be a sign that this man may not know what he’s talking about. Then he said to not measure the active form. There is ideology here, sound like a religion.
