Tip for anyone else using this excellent hack: To open the lid, squeeze under both of the tabs on the lid. Pry upwards from the space that creates. To make life easier next time... Using a knife, gently shave off the tabs on the body of the filter that are visible now that the lid has been removed.

Thank you, this is what the video should have demonstrated.

@@bgrabow We just did that today using a small flathead screwdriver. The first filter opened well, the second was as bit sticky. kzfaq.infolkX4MCOttU0

The filter media can be purchased here: amzn.to/3LjB7dn This will save you a LOT of money vs buying Vitamix's over priced full replacement filters!

Also - since the unit is marketed as a tool to reduce one's waste input - the impact of the filter with plastic container that they recommend changing every 3 months - is pretty big. If they get it right - they will start making these intentionally refillable.

Thanks Kirk for this. We've opened our filters today and we're going to dry out the charcoal pellets and see whether we can reuse them in a couple of months' time. It's such a waste because the plastic casing is so environmentally unfriendly and the manufacturer doesn't even accept the return of these filters!

Just drying in ambient temperature air? No, that won't do anything. You need to bake it at elevated temperatures to drive off the volatile compounds adsorbed in the activated carbon. It's a similar process to reactivating silica gel by baking off the water inside. But, realistically, you're better off just crushing those saturated pellets and mixing them into your soil to form terra preta. It'll feed the soil microbes with whatever organic vapors got trapped in the carbon matrix and provide a breeding ground to further inoculate the soil over time.

Do I need to use activated charcoal for this, or can I just make biochar and use pieces I made in my backyard?
@KirkMook5 ай бұрын
I believe activated has more open areas which absorb more than other types. Just try it with whatever you have. It's not like this is a permanent hack :)

How do you open the filter?
@KirkMook2 жыл бұрын
Just pop off the cap, carefully.

Squeeze the area below the two tabs you can see on the lid, then pry off the lid from space that squeezing makes.
