In an interesting turn of events, this animation actually came out in 1986. Jim Reardon was one of the original directors on the Simpsons, and he made this in art school. So, technically, the original comment is correct; this is kind of like Newgrounds before Newgrounds

According to someone I know in the animation trade, Charles Schulz was shown this on video at an animation convention. Jim Reardon and friends supposedly managed to talk Schulz into watching the film to get his opinion. He reportedly sat silent and motionless as he watched it. After it was finished he stood up, cleared his throat, and said, "Very clever, very funny, but just don't do it again, okay?" That was it.

In the 2000s, this would've been called Charlie the Kid for the Original Xbox. It aimed to get a T rating and aim for an older audience but due to constraints it got an E10+ rating. It was seen as wildly different from the other games in the Charlie the Kid series and was seen as controversial most of the time.

Funny you mention that. The student film was made by Jim Reardon. Who is he you might ask? A Simpsons director from seasons 9-15, and a writer for John K's Mighty Mouse reboot. His first work was this cartoon. Actually I found something even bigger: he even Storyboarded for WALL-E and did some stuff for Wreck It Ralph. Dudes going places way beyond our measure.
