Bonnie Hampton with her student, Kyeong Hwa Kim performs the Vivaldi Double Cello Concerto accompanied by the California Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, in their season's finale at the Califronia Theater.

@@E_MZ_ when considering tempo one must consider the mode of playing prevail any during the composer life. This tempo is approximate for Vivaldi's period, and allows time to experience form and movement of the music.

Just beautifully played, never got why everyone is after "faster and faster" in music, really. This is music, not sports. This highly concertant version brings out the sheer beauty of Vivaldi´s music and gives the listener enough time to appreciate the high quality of the corresponance between the 2 Cellos as well as between the 2 Cellos and the orchestra. Bonnie Hampton has mastered that for sure. Awesome !

+Mad Matt Faster music means it is more energetic, but I understand what you mean, some pieces are made for specific tempos, and this tempo is good for this piece (maybe just a little bit faster)

When the music speeds up or slows down, it shows intensity and drama, as music shows a story, and the instruments are merely roles played by different actors (musicians). But yes, some music really should stay at one tempo sometimes.

The old lady's vibrato is so epic, I feel like only old people are capable of playing such nice slow vibrato. My teacher is about her age and constitution and her vibrato is exactly the same

I'm a huge metal head but I have always liked classical, you really can hear the inspiration from pieces like this in some of metallica's early work before Cliff Burton's death and in other bands that metallica has inspired like Avenged Sevenfold. And yes there is some similar playing in bands like Cannibal Corpse whether you guys like it or not.

Perfect tempo, I hate when Vivaldi is played too fast. I would choose much smaller orchestra, they are quite unable to do weaker dynamics at some parts, because the orchestra is so damn loud

Tann, what you think to be a rule is a much later convention. In Vivaldi's time they not only clapped but made a lot of noise during the playing. The nearest thing today is how people react DURING jazz concerts. In my view, it is the RIGHT way :-)

Kapp Otto sometimes I wish audience was allowed to hoot and hollar after sick solos and cry during sad parts. It would make me feel better as a musician. People say it might screw up recording or break concentration, but as a musician the most joyous thing is to make your audience feel, and to get recognition like that would kind of be cool.

Haydn use to use trinados to say to his audience "You can applaude" like in a jazz show, after a solo. So, now we are in the 21's and people like you say things like that... Shame

Why is my orchestra teacher giving this piece (the first movement) to us when we are 7th graders. I am a bassist too and I have only played for 1 year. My cello partner has played for 3. I really hope that we can ace this song though. She plays cello 1 and I play the cello 2 part. I love this song but hate playing it. Well I guess we can prevail!

I prefer the flugel horn modified version by Sergei Nakariakov & Kirill Soldatov (highly recommend). But still sounds great.

i love how clear and rich they played but i didn't hear the distinctions between piano and forte. Although they played beautifully, the dynamics weren't executed properly.

Breanna Romero baroque style music usually won't have any type of dynamic fluctuations most of it is supposed to be played forte but now with more modern directors dynamics are implemented it's all usually on how the director wants to execute the piece

Brandon Ramirez that is a valid point and i see what you mean. I played this piece before and based off my previous knowledge, i was confused as to why they weren't executing the dynamics. But alas, each person plays it differently depending on how they percive the music. They notes are the same, but the emotion is portrayed differently, depending on the player. 😀

I wonder if it's just me who noticed that the lady in blue moved her fingers along the cello's neck gracefully and fluidly while her companion, although equally as passionate, had hers (seemingly) tensed and rigid. my (perhaps erroneous) conclusion: playing with elegance is what sets masters apart in their field of expertise.
