He cut right down the middle of conservatism differentiating between libertarian conservatism and protectionist conservatism and provided clear, concise, and well-articulated reasons with examples and did so with charisma and charm. Libertarianism is the Dumbest Political Ideology on the Right side of the Spectrum... It ranks up there with its counterpart of Socialism. As a Libertarian, you people actually stand for nothing... Let me give you a few examples: LIBERTARIAN: "I'm against Abortion, but hey, if you want to, go ahead and do it... who am I to tell you what to do?" LIBERTARIAN: "I'm pro Free Speech, but if you are for Censorship, then go right ahead, who am I to tell you what to do?" LIBERTARIAN: I believe in Freedom of Religion, but if you are for an Islam Only State, then go right ahead, who am I to tell you what to do?" LIBERTARIAN: 'I''m against childp orn0 graphy, but if you are into that, go right ahead, who am I to tell you what to do?" The RESPONSE of the LEFT: Great... ! When we get into Power, we will MAKE you do it our way.

Vivek's own example of the train disaster shows why we cannot completely get rid of the administrative state. Don't get carried away by the rhetoric. The administrative state will continue to exist, albeit in a reduced form, and preferably it should be populated with people who are ideologically opposed to its expansion.

In economic terms, trade, immigration, and automation all fall in the same category. While at first glance, those three things in of themselves appear to compete with native labor and thus reduce purchasing power, that’s simply not true. All three increase total supply in the economy, and in a free market (very important qualifier), it happens that they produce more than they consume. Otherwise it wouldn’t be profitable to make that trade or hire that immigrant or buy that robot. The only way for a native worker’s purchasing power to decrease would be if their percentage slice of the consumption pie decreased significantly to offset the growth of the pie. But every occupation is affected by at least one of either trade, immigration, or automation. The ratios of the consumptive slices is rather unchanged, assuming there is no state policy that protects one occupation over another. While there will be more competition in your occupation, that detriment is more than offset by cheaper goods and services you obtain from everybody other industry. However, even from a purely economic point of view, immigration quickly becomes detrimental if it is subsidized (free schools and healthcare), if housing supply is constrained (i.e. zoning laws due to local opposition to population increase), or only unskilled labor is coming in (more willing to be trafficked than engineers). Even without that, you still have the massive effect on the culture, demographics, and political identity of the nation. Accordingly, instead of permanent immigration, there should be a guest worker program where people come in to work in their prime years and return to retire. Dedicated areas for housing would need to be created for that purpose to avoid the local opposition to development that would otherwise result in increased housing scarcity and prices we see now. As for trade, tariffs should only be retaliatory in nature to get other countries to lower tariffs. The end goal being zero tariffs worldwide. Trade deficits are essentially equivalent to gifts. You just pocket the excess and use domestic labor to produce more of whatever else consumers demand. There is always more and more consumer demand in the face of increasing purchasing power. The only exception to free trade would be restrictions on sourcing essential national security goods from adversaries. Finally, automation really has no caveats, except of course making sure AI doesn’t decide to exterminate us one day.

Democracies and republics create political factions that use the people to get into the federal government. Jacksonian democracy was a reaction against Hamiltonian bureaucrats who spent a lot of money. Only Andrew Jackson has paid back our debts and balanced the budget. We need this kind of figure every 8 years in America. Also Warren Buffet's idea, if Congress overspends, make them ineligible for reelection.
@vaportrails7943
@vaportrails7943 Ай бұрын
This is where Vivek is soft. At this point, a large majority of Americans want a moratorium on immigration like we had from the 1920s until the 1960s. And when it comes to trade, the top priority must be the elimination of the trade deficit, which exploded exponentially starting in the 1990s, and has been bleeding 3% of GDP for 20+ years, which is a far greater harm to the economy than any benefit to businesses or consumers. The first place to start is to eliminate any trade deals that are lopsided against us, and to completely stop using trade policy as an instrument of foreign policy, where we’re willing to give away bad trade deals to achieve some other objective. International trade organizations should be avoided in favor of bilateral negotiations, and any barriers and tariffs erected by the other country must be matched by ours. The trade must be even, or we lose. A surplus is a fantasy at this point, but that would be even better. As it stands, we are making other countries rich, and the only way that money makes its way back to the US is through them buying our debt, and American assets like real estate. We are giving other countries the money to buy our country out from under us, and they call that “foreign investment”. Meanwhile, the standard of living of the average American declines, because they aren’t any part of those transactions, aside from buying cheap plastic junk at Walmart. Which is not remotely an equal trade for their suppressed incomes. That must end. The only alternative is what the left offers, which is welfare, and possibly “UBI”. Which is the typical socialist recipe of making everyone equally poor while the pie shrinks. So the talk about protecting specific industries (which may be called for in critical areas) is missing the point that the US economy has been disintegrated across the board by these massive trade deficits. That must be the focus, and he didn’t even mention it. Libertarianism is not conservatism. It’s all well and good to promote economic libertarianism within the US, but it must stop at the border. Low taxes and regulations that make the US a favorable place to do business? Absolutely. But mass immigration and massive trade deficits to satisfy the corporate thirst for cheap labor must end, and must end now, or the country will end. And immigration control must include raw numbers, because the raw numbers are what make it unsustainable and destructive. Immigrants have to be absorbed and assimilated, and when the flow is too fast, that doesn’t happen. Not to mention the continual downward pressure on wages. The raw numbers are what is destabilizing the society.

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams' perspectives on commerce policy. Source: Friends Divided: Thomas Jefferson and John Adams by Gordon S. Wood, Chapter 6-8: But Jefferson, the enlightened dreamer, hadn't given up. In 17/85, he asked Adams what he thought of his draft of a model treaty to be presented to the courts of England and France. He admitted that the treaty went beyond our powers, and beyond the powers of Congress too. But unfortunately, it also went beyond the powers of possibility. It was truly radical. It not only proposed the free flow of commerce between the 2 signatory nations, but also provided that the intercourse between all the subjects and citizens of the 2 parties shall be free and unrestrained. While traveling in each other's territory, the peoples of each nation would be considered to every intent and purpose as members of the nation where they are, entitled to all the protections, rights, and advantages of the natives of the other nation, but without any requirement for religious conformity. The signatory nations might confine their public offices to natives. Otherwise, this treaty that placed natives and aliens on an equal footing promised a mutuality of citizenship among nations. It was the fulfillment of an enlightened vision of a world that would exist virtually without borders. Adams politely told Jefferson that his model treaty was a fine, idealistic effort, but, unfortunately, it was not appropriate to the realities of European politics. We must not, my friend, be the bubbles of our own liberal sentiments. If we cannot obtain reciprocal liberality, we must adopt reciprocal prohibitions, exclusions, monopolies, and imposts. Our offers have been fair, more than fair. If they are rejected, we must not be dupes. By 1787, Adams had become convinced, as he told Jefferson, that neither philosophy nor religion nor morality nor wisdom nor interest will ever govern nations or parties against their vanity, their pride, their resentments or revenges, or their avarice or ambitions. Nothing but force and power and strength can restrain them. In ascribing personal passions to nations in this peculiar manner, Adams was merely expressing his deepening understanding of himself and his fellow human beings. In the end, Adams' realism turned out to be more accurate than Jefferson's enlightened vision. Only 3 states, Sweden, Prussia, and Morocco, peripheral powers with little overseas trade, agreed to sign liberal commercial treaties with the United States, none of which involved more than most favored nation commercial relations. Most European states were indifferent to the Americans' enlightened ideas of commerce. Ignorance, said Jefferson, to the power of American commerce.

Vivek is doing great work getting us to think about these things. But I am not convinced that our concerns about Xinjiang are any more real than Black Lives Matter. So far as I can tell, that too is propaganda. All the most lurid things we hear about Xinjiang and China in general, are false I believe. We should compete with China but strictly on a basis of truth and competence and productivity. I hate the way it looks like we are trying to "contain" China and keep them down.

Personally, I would prefer a libertarian free trade world, but at the moment there is another reason to prefer going all the way to protectionism: it reduces our temptation to interfere in other sovereign countries around the world; it would wind in many of the tentacles of the American empire, and that in turn would reduce the motivation of other countries to steer our foreign policy, and allow more attention to domestic policy. In the short term this is economically bad for our allies, but in the long term, it is good for them, starting with regaining their sovereignty AKA freedom. And free allies are strong allies in a real sense. Look at Viktor Orban: Hungary is just about the only sovereign country in Europe, and also the only one that is any actual help in interacting with Russia. Contrast with the UK, which slavishly helped the USA into the stupid Iraq war, and right now is one of the most stupidly gung-ho pro-Ukraine countries (BTW I am a Brit who used to be exactly that stupid too).

Soany good points - morning news a Canadian got killed by IDF near Gaza in their response to stabbing attacks on their citizens. When you distribute citizenship like cookies - that's bound to happen.Justin got so many Syrians and treated them with nice hotels because he is so close to Aga Khan and other leaders but not much attention is put on their integration. I am hoping they will take the benefit of opportunities but it becomes you never know

Here’s the problem: - I don’t want a left-wing nanny state or a right wing nanny state either - but if two teams are playing a game and one side cheats and the other side doesn’t - and the referees do nothing to stop the cheating - the cheaters will win… even if, in some long-run view, the cheaters are hurting themselves on what they could have been. The above is the challenge to national libertarians and national conservatives. It’s a very DIFFICULT issue.

So - I disagree with the "single language" requirement - You can have national unity despite a multi-lingual citizenry. Also, anecdotally multi-lingual citizens tend to be higher IQ and hence accrues to the higher intelligence of the collective nation. Linguistic diversity is a good idea - religious diversity is generally a good idea - within the construct of constitution being supreme over religious doctrine.
