Conquering a city through violence, while being an impressive military feat for anyone fascinated with warfare, isn't exactly something to be proud of from a morally ethical standpoint. That's why you get discharged after a certain age. If the armed forces used your logic of 'an extra fighter is never useless', they wouldn't have a minimum age requirement for enlistment, which they do. You have to be at least a certain age in order to serve. While he was denied for his disability, it's because his disability hindered his ability to be an effective soldier. If a twelve year old was to enlist, they would be denied service because they would be ineffective. If someone who didn't have any medical training applied to be a nurse, they would be denied because they would be ineffective. If someone who had a disability, more specifically a deformity that impeded their ability to be an effective soldier, they would be denied the ability to fight.

I think to say that they were the best infantry in history is too generalized because today's soldiers are also often infantry. And as good as the Spartans were, they would never have a chance in a battle against a troop of modern soldiers with assault rifles.
