www.ultralightflyer.com - VL3 is an experimental aircraft in the U.S.A. it single-engined, low-wing airplane of classic design with retractable or fixed landing gear and with side by side seating.
JMB Aircraft attracted attention with their retractable LSA-like aircraft. I’ve seen this company in Europe at the Aero Friedrichshafen show. They are impressive marketers and they wish to use those skills to promote their faster model that smokes along at 145 knots propelled by the 100 horsepower Rotax 912 engine.
If the VL3 looks vaguely familiar to you, congratulations on your sharp eye. JMB Aircraft is the new production company of the VL3, a plane designed by Vanessa Air and produced in the past by Aveko.
Truly keen readers will recognize Aveko was the builder behind the Gobosh 800XP from the earliest years of Light-Sport Aircraft. The 31.5-foot-span Aveko/Gobosh version is a fixed gear LSA model where the 27.7-foot-span retractable VL3 is allowed to perform better when registered as an Experimental Amateur Built or other experimental category.
The LSA model maxes at 119 knots in max cruise where the high cruise of VL3 is 145 knots.

The VL3 915 has a cruise speed of 370kph but requires only 175m of runway. For only $205K. Nice!

I have always admired this design and truly wish our LSA regulations here in the US mirrored that of Europe and would allow such aircraft... even if it would require further training or endorsements! Even with MOSIAC on the horizon and an NPRM to be released in the next 2-3 years, I do not think we will ever be allowed to fly something like the VL3 with retractable landing gear as a Sport Pilot... We may be allowed single lever constant speed props. Anyhow, I am curious if this company is still importing aircraft into the US? Last I heard there were quite a few customers who placed deposits however had not received their aircraft even after 8-10 months of waiting. I truly hope they were able to turn things around and have resolved these issues. The VL3 is an excellent design, and beautiful looking aircraft. I had spoken with the company a few years back about obtaining a kit and the costs etc... for $150-160k it would be an impressive performer as well.

Dan I’ve been looking at the vl3 for a couple of months now. It’s an exceptional plane, performance is off the hock. I understood they had a distributor in Chicago ?

The Lancair 320/360 and possibly legacy killer. What I am wanting is a Lancair IV or a Bonanza/Baron killer with a turbo Rotax. (Or two)

Very pretty airplane. But....it's not an LSA. This is more along the line of a certified Lancair. Maybe one day LSA rules will include Retractable gear and 147 kts.

I understand that it’s 50 degrees of flaps is key to it’s low stall speed. Why don’t other planes like the lancair do the same?

Could this airplane be purchased from Europe, imported and flown legally in the U.S. if the need for it to be an LSA is not an issue? Basically a private pilot with a 3rd class medical?
