To all those “why he isn’t speaking english” comments... sometimes, as someone who grew up with parents who always talked in their native tongue, I respect that he talks in what he is most comfortable with, instead of choppy English... let the man be comfortable in his own skin, his biggest fans don’t speak English and he probably takes them into consideration so they can understand him as well... Vlad wasn't much of a talker in the first place. Even his Hispanic teammates said he was a quiet guy. He could just be shy in English. Plus he spent early his career in Montreal, a French speaking city, not the USA his whole career. ESPN should've cut the translator sections and subtitled it. I noticed people complain less in the comments section when they do that.

How long did he live in North America and not learn? 20 years and you cant answer any in English? Get the fuck out of here. Russian hockey players with no English who use a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LANGUAGE STRUCTURE (Cyrillic) learn it within 5 years!!!! Lazy ass Latin American ball players fuck em.

it's funny how the interpreter adds so much more information than what Vlad said. I agree with a comment down below, they can just include the subtitles instead, faster interview and more accurate english responses

He speaks a little bit however for an interview he feels more comfortable speaking Spanish. Try to learn another language as an adult is not easy and most of the time is because we don't want to be the laugh of everybody.

What I can't understand, is that a person who has spent considerable time living in a part of the world where the overwhelming majority of the people do not speak your language, yet you still refuse to learn it: don't get me wrong, this isn't a knock on the Latin players, for most of them can speak English with varying degrees of fluency from just a few words to get by, to players like David Ortiz or Pedro Martinez, who can speak English like a pro...heck, even Ichiro can speak English, and Japanese is completely unrelated to any Western language, from characters, to verbal expression, to sentence structure, etc...sure, Vlad Sr. is a humble guy, and a HOFer, but at least learn a few words...
