Incredible Mozart! Ignore what the purists say about how to perform this composer and just enjoy Horowitz's very musical take on one of Mozart's sonata.

A reasonably musical sewing machine as far as the more dramatic passages of the Mozart sonata are concerned, the rest is sweet. No comparison, by the way, with the very noble and restrained rendition of the Sonata K. 331, which would have given enough opportunity for exaggeration, in 1966 at Carnegie Hall.

Without a doubt, one of the best piano recitals recorded live, Horowitz at the zenith of his technical and interpretive splendor, the most electrifying, hypnotic and extreme version of Prokofiev's seventh sonata.

I believe that I was there that night! The only seats available were “stage seats and we were asked to wear demurely colored clothing- not to detract or distract!! My two sisters and I were competitive pianists, not good enough for the concert stage but good enough for me to perform at my Baccalaureate!It was an evening spent with a genius!

I think Horowitz is one of the greatest pianisto in the world. I like his performances. especialy this live is wonderfull. Many change of piano tone make me happy.

E oggi ascoltano i virtuosi privi di nerbo che ci sono rimasti...il Prokofiev qui proposto è qualcosa di semplicemente superlativo! Il tactus inflessibile e modernissimamente sentito ( con una cattiveria stupenda) del finale si unisce ad un dinamismo travolgente di stampo post- romantico...semplicemente superlativo!

Horowitz is not only a beautiful pianist but I like to listen to him talk. He can be very funny. Also because of him I have discovered Scriabin something I thought impossible. Such a man.

Utterly agree with comment below. I'd add that in the Mozart, Horowitz is at the very peak of artistic nuance whereby the different voices, within their respective registers, play out a magical dialogue with each-other. Heifetz often achieved precisely the same thing; the effect of a perfectly spun mini-opera without words.

Quite stunning. So this is how Horowitz sounded in his halcyon days. Fascinating how his playing here has everything - this is a purer, more noble Horowitz than I have ever heard before. A breathtaking amalgam of virtuosity, intellect and artistry.

Witold Domeyko I worked on and somewhat learned this sonata after hearing this recording in the 1980s, had the same reaction, TOTAL head over heels!!

Wonderfully nuanced performance with passages and peddling that only he could achieve. Hearing this performance for the first time now in 2024, I was two yrs old in 1951. I heard him in Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor MI in the late 70’s.

This performance occurred on a monday in the evening, not the usual legendary sunday afternoon timing he later adopted, arguing that people were more relaxed and receptive at that time. But closing out the first half of the program with an incredibly explosive rendering of Prokofiev's Precipitato surely got people's attention providing a perfect backdrop setting for the marvelous Chopin to follow. At any rate, boy was he ever in top form here ... probably many left absolutely stunned at what they just experienced.

That first piece is powerfully and gives me goosebumps..I think Horowitz is the best pianists I ever heard.I agree there was a lot of coughing and hacking ..must of been during winter in New York and let's not forget there were many more smokers back then..

@@RaineriHakkarainen in terms of longevity, technique, and overall success Horowitz pockets most of all your mentioned pianists, I would agree that Artur Rubinstein is also one the best, and amongst his contemporaries Joseph Hoffmann was considered the best.

For my money, Horowitz owns the Scriabin Etude Op. 2 No. 1. The breadth and depth of expression he brings forth here is uniquely compelling. For all those who say that Horowitz was "just a showman," this Scriabin Etude performance shows how sensitive a musician Horowitz was.

his chopin etude op.10 no.4 is absolut perfection. Many pianists play it too fast and lost its mysterius feelings. Horowitz version u can clearly feel the mystery, perfect choice of speed. ANd I believe he can play 2-3x faster if he wanted....effortlessly LoL.. fking legend

Just from an interpretative perspective, this is one endurance test -- passed, of course, with great aplomb by the greatest pianist of his century --and my gratitude, for the thousands of hours Horowitz left us, leaves me wordless!

I've been playing that sonata all my life. He is marvelous, but the third movement tempo is not Allegretto!!!

Look who's to say who is the best?...is it not very personal and subjective ? I guess the question to ask is how does this music move me?!...well let me tell you the Clara Schuman piece had me corkscrewing my way through the Orion arm belt of the Milky way around the center of the galaxy!

Sychophantic as I am , regarding Sviatoslav Richter; I must however give Vladimir Horowitz his due accolades, particularly with respect to his performance of Prokofiev's Seventh Piano Sonata. Horowitz plays it with such chutzpah, yet the sonorities are eternally there; just the same with the Chopin Polonaises, the flash and brilliance reverberate and resonate with me.

***** yes, 'gie' is the correct way to spell the last syllable of the name of the robber baron of steel. the record jacket has 'Carnegy' as the spelling. i think the emphasis of Mr. Herz' comment was on 'look at the record jacket spelling.' but then he tags the end of that clause with a prepositional phrase that includes the correct spelling of the name of the robber baron. so, if one reads his comment logically according to common syntactic practice, as you have done, one could only conclude that Mr. Herz was implying that 'Carnegie' is spelled incorrectly. i immediately noticed a miscommunication when i saw your reply and his poorly constructed sentence. so, i looked at the record jacket, and with my magnifying glass, i could indeed discern a spelling of 'Carnegy' (sic). but i don't think that's so interesting, nor do i think the album is very interesting either. however, i find failures in communication to be fascinating. muchas gracias y saludos desde Tokio.

I believe Horowitz was the first to play this in the US and Prokofiev admired his recording. It is a very personal view of the work.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Horowitz's exceptional handling of Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6 1:16:47-1:23:50. Just sublime.Though I also liked other interpretations such as Martha Argerich, there's just no comparison with what is presented here.

Making Schumann not sound meandering, irrelevant, and insane is also the mark of a pianistic genius. I do prefer his Mozart, though.

For me unquestionably Horowitz at his pianistic peak. The Prokofieff coda is even by his standards probably unsurpassed for sheer raucousness, and which virtuoso would dare - in Carnegie Hall - perform the Chopin Etude Op.10#4 so slowly as he does? Yet his articulation and sonority is absolutely electrifying; again, Horowitz at his inimitable greatest.

The RCA release of Horowitz's 1952 is fab, but I kept looking at the lp album cover, specifically the "Carnegy" adjective of the "Hall," and finally remembered that the adjective ends in "is," not "y." But the discovery took me 5 minutes, since I was distracted by listening to the performance. Or. ....had I succumbed to misfired brain neurons. Hmm.

You know, I just had a thought as to why he gave up live performing in 53. He did Schubert's last big sonata in 53 (Bb) in 53, and the critics were not amused. He was trying to do something other than turn the piano upside down, and people were not letting him-like here in 51. I would've stopped playing live as well.
