Although I hold some respect for Putin in bringing back the tune of the Soviet anthem and still allowing Russian people to celebrate and feel nostalgic for their Soviet past. I visited Leningrad during workers day in May, and saw a huge parade of people waving Soviet flags and holding portraits of Stalin ect. It was really cool to see. However I agree Putin is nowhere near the leader that Lenin was in terms of their individual personalities and values. Putin probably only ‘supports’ his people’s nostalgia for the Soviet period to stay on their good side, as on my trip most of the locals I spoke to were very against Putin and his leadership in general.

It could be, but I don't think it would likely be the reason since Nicolas wasn't the one who excecuted Lenin's brother, it was his father Alexander. And even if Lenin was trying to get revenge, why kill the whole family? The reason to kill all of them could be to eliminate a potential legitimate heir to the throne, but I don't think he would just kill them off purely because a member of their family killed his brother. But who knows, people can be weird

Every serious researcher agrees there's no outright proof, but there's a ton of smaller bits of evidence as well as a few larger chunks, such as Trotsky's diary entry seemingly acknowledging Lenin's hand in the massacre of the royal family. Most historians who write on the topic these days appear to be in strong agreement that there's little doubt Lenin ordered the murders. As to why, there's really only one reason that would compel him to do so, and it contradicts your statement that the Bolsheviks were popular (they were not in most of Russia, look at their election results before they decided to abolish elections). There's every reason to believe Lenin feared both a military reaction by loyalist forces (yup, that happened) and a popular uprising due to the illegitimate way his party rose to power (that also happened at least to some extent but is rarely discussed for ideological reasons we could go into). He took away the autonomy of the soviets and imprisoned and murdered socialists who showed signs of resisting the new order; mostly anarchists, whose last stand was made when Trotsky sent the Red Army to destroy the Black Army in the Ukraine, whose efforts against the reactionary White Army (so many colours!) had quite literally saved the October Revolution at least twice. Against this backdrop it shouldn't be controversial that he saw the Romanovs as potential figureheads of a political rollback that would end his new regime. This would have been more than reason enough to have them eliminated. There's some indication that he weighed the pros and cons of the decision carefully before making the call. His official reaction to the news of the royal family's death shows peculiar signs of being, shall we say, dishonest. If you'd like sources or further reading material for my claims I'd be glad to provide them.
