I heard Richter once and will never forget it. He was everything his recordings had led you to expect and more. The miracle was how he was completely self-effacing and yet you knew were in the presence of a miracle. Musicianship, musical intelligence, technical problems completely surmounted. As close to perfection as one can expect in this life. Listen to his playing during Op. 26, it's like a great musician is in charge of each individual voice, treble and bass, and the balance between legato and staccato is just miraculous. Wit, playfulness and mischief that never descends into caricature. The word genius is overused, but, if any pianist was or will ever be worthy of the epithet, it was and is Sviatoslav Richter.

Richter's interpretation of Beethoven feels relaxed, clear, articulate and leaves enough breath for us to enjoy. The phrases he expresses are enough to enjoy any time of the day or night. Very nonchalantly is his style and always fantastic to listen to. It's as if he plays not just for show but for the love of the composer himself. What gems.

Sviatoslav Richter was the epitome of what classical pianist is. Years of studying and the being consumed by the artistry of magnificent layers of colors that only come within those of genius. Elements of touches of the soul within that flow threw the energy each touch of finger tips of the gods and beyond. ❤ Bravo 👏

There are those pianists which you just wish you had managed to hear live at some point. Richter is one of those for me, came here from that incredible Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto no 1 with von Karajan and the Vienna Symphony from 1962. I would also love to have heard Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli live too. As a young child I did hear Artur Rubinstein, it was a long time ago but I know he played some Chopin ! Thanks for posting this outstanding Beethoven recital by Richter.

I saw all 3. Rubinstein was too old at 88 and it was not that memorable. Richter I saw twice when he was in his early to mid 70's here in London and one concert was extraordinary, the famous Barbican recital which I think was 1988 and the 2nd was outstanding but lacked something as it does not linger in my memory. Michelangeli I saw 4 times in London and it was electric each time. every pianist within 500 miles with a night off there to watch and listen. Such an aura and charisma of the like we will never see again, of that I am sure.

A gentle giant sitting above and close to the piano with a beautifully controlled touch, a wonderfully controlled phraseology, a perfect sense of tempo, a lack of unwanted ego, artist and instrument in the disciplined service of the composer. Somebody placed him second to Horowitz, but Horowitz did not have the discipline that Richter has. Horowtiz was great, Richter was a genius. The great Gilels lived in Richter's shadow. Richter was a relative latecomer to the piano but was a solid music director and conductor at a very early age. He came to the piano with great understanding of music and its composers. By the way, his Hammerklavier is without compare. His Schumann Waldzenen and Fantasie is incredible, his Schubert Sonatas are fabulous, his Rachmaninov is so powerful etc. etc. Oh, and his playing of the piano with Rostropovich doing the Beethoven cello sonatas at the Edinburgh Festival in 1964 is, I think the greatest demonstration of ensemble piano playing ever given! And that's all I have to say about that.

I always had the impression that he rehearsed until he had the piece down, 80% . And for better, more spontaneous results he winged it for the remaining 20% . He must have been the only one in the whole world who could pull that off , thanks to his superb technique. What else? Oh yeh, all the notes are played crisply. Even in presto and ffff parts. Lat but not least, from my twenties until my fifties I had a 33rpm DGG LP with Prokoviev 's sonata no 8. I was very careful with it , and listened to it, mostly when I was sad and a bit depressed. I can honestly say that this LP has consistly uplifted my spirits. And I never knew who was performing , I barely knew who Prokoviev was and who Richter. It didn't matter.

this recital is in fact very eclectic, even if the only composer is Beethoven, since these sontas are so different from each other !!!!! Gérard Begni very interesting observation. Ending the program on no 12 really does exhibit the eclectic aspect of this performance. Related to this is Beethoven’s genius of transcending the purely classical understanding of the sonata form. If you play Beethoven’s piano sonatas from 1 to 32, it’s truly amazing how he retains the core of thematic development in the sonata form while at the same time transcending the form.

Quite the masterpieces played in superb and articulate form. It's hard to play Beethoven with a bit of different style and approach on every sonata whether earlier or later. Also, his recording of the F Minor Brahms Piano Quintet with the Rati Ensemble is one of a kind. He also does the Brahms Paganini variations both a and b. Equally sublime.

Until 1960 all pianists sounded good to me until I discovered Richter. Then in the 70's I couldn't tolerate most pianists. This happens to you once start listening to Richter. Today I can listen to Yuja Wang as long as I can get back to Richter.

@@lea.5858 Talking about Gould, Richter said every 500 years someone like him comes along. Gould is very special.

R I C H T E R, der vielseitigste Pianist.

An utter tragedy that we should have the irreverent intrusion of adverts in the middle of movements - or at all! We have the re-creation of some of humanity's greatest works if art by a supreme artist, being spat on!

I like this a lot. I know Richter is lauded for his Bach but I feel that he had a better rapport with the music of Beethoven. Thank you for uploading this wonderful concert.
