They we're definitely trying to incite some sort of response with a "draw Muhammad" art contest. I don't understand what kind of political point one would try to make by doing something like that. As far as I know, Charlie Hebdo didn't target any religion in particular, so what happened to them is unforgivable through a Western lens; but this instance here seemed like they were trying to draw out extremists rather than make any sort of religious or social commentary. Let me clarify something very important. There are reasons why drawing of the prophet is forbideen. First let me use the prophet Jesus (Pbuh) as an example. The image of Jesus (Pubh) taoday that is most popular is the blue eyed, golden haired and cacausian looking image but in reality he is hebrew and probably with dark skin and brown eyes. If you put up a image of the prophet the image will be what was presented to you or you make the prophet looks more exclusive towards your ethnicity and race. The second reason is if you mock and make your religous figures and core belief systems as a joke or a cartoon the religion loses its divinity overtime bacause it wont be taken seriously. If your religon is a joke why bother praying. Factual thing happening now is you see Jesus (Pbuh) potrayed in some movies and cartoon as joke or comical character, this is the same Jesus (Pbuh) that sybmbolises Christianity that has been turned in too a jester. In some European countries and States in the US Chriastianity is losing alot of members due to a declining lack of faith and other issues but the mockery of religion might be the source of the decline. So this is why some Muslims fight hard to stop people from mocking their religion under the guise of Freedom.

Freedom of speech is great, but does that mean we should throw conventions where we draw insulting pictures of Black people or make insulting images of peoples mothers? What people need to understand is, Muslims love the prophet Muhammad (pbuh), Jesus (pbuh) and all the prophets of God more than we love our own family... So insulting him is worse than insulting our family. Second of all and most importantly, the reason images of the prophet Muhammad are not allowed has nothing to do with insulting... It's to avoid idol worship that you see prominent in other religions. And that's why images are forbidden, to avoid people worshipping Muhammad, nothing to do with insulting Islam. LJ is on point, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was not around when people drew images of him however, his companions (May Allah be pleased with them) would not have tolerated anyone mock the prophet (pbuh). Hence, the one who mocks is likely to be dealt with. Muslims don't mock other faiths for that reason so we do not tolerate anyone mock Islaam (Allah and His messenger and the companions). People should acknowledge our boundaries as we acknowledge others.
