--------
Dwight "Doc" Gooden reflected on his early baseball career and his struggles with alcoholism. Drafted fifth in the first round, Gooden started in the minors to gain experience before joining the majors at 19. Despite initial success, his time in the minors exposed him to heavy drinking, which later evolved into a serious problem. On joining the New York Mets, Gooden earned the nickname "Doctor K" for his impressive fastball and curveball, dubbed "Lord Charles." Meeting Darryl Strawberry, who had joined the team a year earlier, was pivotal. Despite initial hiccups, including a drunken first encounter, Strawberry became a significant figure in Gooden's life, helping him navigate his early career and media attention.

For me as a kid it was the Pirates outfield, Barry Bonds, Andy Van Slyke and Bobby Bonilla in the early 90's. I actually went to a game in 91 at Three River Stadium and Doc Gooden was actually pitching that day for the Mets.

Doc Gooden and Darryl Strawberry were baseball GODS back in the 80s. I am so happy both of them survived. They both are examples of good people who were exposed and succumb to the trappings of fame in a big city New York market. I was there and I went to those METS games at the time and NY was full of buzz about the Miracle METS. Thank you VLAD for provide a safe platform for these legends to tell their story. It’s a lesson for all of us think about when you’re at the top of the world and can have anything you want, what will you do and how would you behave. Stay healthy Doc and be a mentor to the next generation

Several years back I read Doc’s autobiography, it was really good . Being from Seattle , we always hate the Yankees ( even though doc was mainly a Met he still had his time with the yanks) but I still always respected and admired how well of a pitcher doc was . I had no idea about docs struggle with the drugs and his story about too being hungover and sick from the drugs watching the rest of his team walking the parade from when they won the World Series from a TV in the projects !! That must’ve been the worst feeling in the world 😮
