Part 2: • Teddy Atlas on Being L...
--------
Boxing trainer Teddy Atlas opened up about his turbulent early years growing up in Staten Island. Atlas talked about coming from a well-off background with his father being a doctor but feeling drawn towards a tougher life. He shared a story about a violent confrontation where he ended up getting slashed in the face, leading to 400 stitches. The identity of his assailant was discovered later, with Atlas revealing that plans to confront the man were eventually abandoned.

I remember the 007 back in the day. I’m from Harlem, and a lot of guys carried that 007 which was a folding knife, and not a switchblade. And like Teddy said, you were flick it open, and there was a technique to it in fact, me and my cousin from Brooklyn always practice flicking that 007 open. So what Teddy said it was all about the flick of the wrist. It was a big knife too, and had a rawhide string attached to it. A lot of New Yorkers carried the 007 back in the days. We talking back in the 70s and 80s.

Like others have said. You can tell obviously this story. Was a huge deal in Teddys life. Maybe it brings some anger. That he’s tried putting behind him. At the end of the day though. We’re all men out here in this world. If someone slashes your face like that. I’d imagine apart of you. Would want to pay that back to the guy with the knife. My 6th grade Middle School yeaar. I remember getting a black eye in a fight. The kid had gotten the better of me. For days weeks months after that. I would go back to that moment. And feel rage in my mind. So so much built up anger. I learned a black eye isn’t so bad and, to move on. Obviously a deep cut on your face hits different. If you can understand what I’m saying here.
