After two months (huhu), I am so happy to release my Vlog #03 (5 minutes) that aims to tell you about "The 4 Considerations Before Taking a Master's Degree". All information coming from this VLOG is based on my personal experiences and may not necessarily agree with books, websites, and university guidelines.
Anyway, if you are contemplating or have been delaying your decision to take a master's degree, here are some important elements that I think you need to consider to obtain not just a graduate school diploma but to complete a master's degree from a quality program.

I may not have the resources and experience right now, but someday I know that it will come in God's perfect time. Hi sir! Felt motivated by this... I have been thinking twice about taking up MA degree. I have always been an overthinker especially when it comes to these kinds of topics because I always have in my mind the thought that I wasn't good and that I might just fail the subjects that I'll be taking since it's already MA. Pero gustong-gusto ko talaga lalo sa big universities, I want to learn more, to better myself, to specialize on something. How I wish I have the guts to take risks!

I am a Medical technology graduate and planning to get an MBA for better job opportunities. I have been contemplating for quite a while whether or not I should get a masters related to my degree. I read that I should take bridging courses first before I can apply for an MBA or MIM. I'm scared and excited at the same time. Any tips?

Hello! In my opinion, getting a master's degree that is related to your profession is important especially when you want to advance or diversify. However, in some cases you may take an MBA even if you do not have a business undergrad because you would like to work in the corporate industry. Getting a master's (or not) will really depend on your life goal 5-10 years from now. Good luck!

Hello sir, I just want to know how are students graded in the grad school aside from the comprehensive exam? Is it similar to the undergrad where you have seat works, homeworks, and quizzes? Also, do the professors check the attendance as well?

Hi there. Well the grading system per graduate school depends. In UP, we grade them numerically pa din pero usually via formative and summative tests. In my case, I give more percentage on their final project/output. Attendance, yes, may rules kasi on that. Pero since lahat remote na... ako sa class ko, I focus more on their outputs than their attendance. :)

Now I would like to try applying in that school but I think they need someone knows a lot about that course. Hello Dr Michael Sy. You are correct that we need to consider the "Program" and "University" before taking a Master's degree. I am currently finishing MBA major in Total Quality Management. I chose Centro Escolar University, because they are the only university in the Philippines offers that program. Sir Michael, I have a plan to pursue Ph.D in UP Open University. What will you say about UP Open University?

Hi Adrian, salamat sa comment. If you look into the UPOU website, they only offer two PhD programs: 1. Doctor of Communication (DCOMM) 2. Doctor of Philosophy in Education (PhD) (Majors: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics) If you think you are interested in these fields, you may pursue this... but if you have a masters in TQM, ano ba ang goal mo later on? Will you go to practice, administration, teaching, research, or QA? However, it is always a good idea to explore another but related field. Nakakaexpand siya ng skills and knowledge. :)

You can ask the program chair of the SW grad program if papayag sila na hindi SW ang iyong undergrad. I think pwede naman. :) But better to ask muna.

Hello Divina, yung best, hindi ko yan masabi. Pero I think if you are an accountant, you can go for masters in business, finance, or in applied mathematics. When you choose a program, look to the future 10 years from now, magagamit mo ba talaga sya sa long term, para hindi sayang. Hoping the best for you!

Hello... It really depends on the program over the university. You look first on what the program/curricular contents first. Do you want to take them, do you need them in your professional practice? What are the requirements. Of course, a national univ will be more prestigious, but I believe that you can choose based on quality and usability over prestige. :)

Sure sure, why not? If you think a master's degree will bolster your career and secure a promotion, why not. Pero sana hindi lang for promotion ang motivation, pero para din sa security ng future mo and sa advancement ng iyong field mo. :) God bless!

Hello Edward. Great to know about your plans of taking the higher road, a master's degree. Before you choose a program, determine who you will become in the next 5 to 10 years... then from there you decide which skillset or knowledge set you need, hence choosing the best master's degree. Kasi minsan not going into a master's degree program is the best choice for your life goals. :)

It really depends on the institution (university/graduate school). Most of the private universities they accept graduate students like in your situation. Yet you need to take or enroll some units/subjects before you take/enroll the core subjects of the program you wish to apply. In our university we called it "bridging".

Hi Eljen. Ano ba ang long term goals mo in terms of career? Make sure to choose a master's degreee program na interesado ka and mapaninindigan mo kahit mahirap. Then pag naisip mo na yan, follow my tips! :)

Hello. Ang bachelor's degree ay nakukuha mo kapag natapos ka ng college. Kung gusto mo pa mag-aral ng isa pang mas mataas na diploma, kadalasan ang tawag diyan ay 'master's' degree na. Kahit hindi ka magaling sa math, you can take any master's degree basta determinado ka at gusto mo yung inaaral mo. :)

Depends on your field. Personally I would suggest doing a masters after 2 years of work experience so you would know the real problems in society, which you will later use as a thesis/project to gain your degree... for relevance not just recognition.

@@marvelyngonzaga1769 depende yan sa preference mo... maraming magagandang English departments sa Pinas especially in grad school: UP, Ateneo, :) But then again, you can ask the alumni and know where they are now. :)

Masters can be done in 3 years sa Pinas if you are full-time. Abroad though, full time masters can only take 1-2 years. :) Depende tlaga.
