Mind = blown. It’s incredible to hear about how deep the thought process goes. I know nothing about generative art, how it’s made or how people come to be generative artists, so your videos are always fascinating. Thanks for sharing!

I think it's fun watching someone in an adjacent art field going over a process. Some things seem comparable, but other parts totally alien. Although I do cut out the parts where it's staring at a screen slowly adjusting a single number/knob/slider for two hours until it's just right/a form of procrastination.

Dan, a most interesting explanation of how you create your art and its structure. Until I was recommended your channel by a friend, I had never even heard of generative art so after watching 4 videos so far, I am a smidgeon more informed. Dan, I love everything about this project. The macro grid composition idea, using midjourney to make colour palettes, the crooked pieces, click to zoom in, the name, the number of editions and price, and most of all the individual outputs themselves that I could stare at all day. Also this video is very well produced, I love and appreciate the step-by-step breakdown (would definitely love to see more code / tutorials), the editing, the music, the closeup shots of those gorgeous prints.😍 Congratulations and thank you for giving us 7VV1N5 and this deeper look into the art and the artist. 🤘🙂

Yay, thank you. It was fun making the video as it made me have to collect my thoughts in one place, and often they're just fleeting steps that take me from one stage to the next, but then get lots along the way. I think I'll do more of these.

I truly appreciate this kind of video. It's interesting to see how other generative artists plan and describe their techniques. It's sometimes a journey that's hard to predict, even harder to fix outcomes in a generative result. I like the end result but had misgivings near the beginning. (A bit like watching Bob Ross on twitch, and when he adds the big tree, people cry "ruined", but by the end they back pedal with "saved").

Haha, that's a lovely way to look at it, and yeah sometimes looking back at how something happened is a lot different to the process. Another time I should make a video as I go along and then we'll get to see more of the mistakes.

Nice to get some insight into the creative process behind the final product! Have you ever worked with Substance (a material design tool sometimes used to quickly generate virtual environments) or have Substance materials feed into your work? I feel the way it allows for randomized/parametric approximations of 'natural' materials is somewhat analogous to the process you are describing here.

Thanks, this is all my own code. Although lots of people like to use p5.js which is excellent for this kind of thing.

Very cool to hear about your process. In relation to your previous video, do you keep a bunch of the digital outputs as artist prints? Or just the physical prints you had made to test?

I don't really "keep" the digital outputs as such. Snapshots get stored in a folder incase I ever want to make a blog post (or book) around a project(s), but I don't keep them to sell as "artist's proofs" digital. I _do_ however keep a couple of prints, but at the moment I'm ending up with more test-prints than I need, so at some point I'll off-load them as gifts to friends and family, lol.

It's just straight up JavaScript for all the coding, then loaded into a browser.

The audio level varies quite a bit in this but once again lovely video!

Yeah, I think I messed up the levels on the louder parts of the music, I try to keep things normalised to -6db, but I think some parts slipped through this time, I'm going to blame lack of sleep, lol!
