What an amazing vlog! So honest and yet so well intentioned for any PHD student. Thank you Tara. I recently got headhunted for my teaching and got a job at Sorbonne University and the Dean gave me similar advice. From then on I’ve offered to write up an alternative curriculum for second language learners of English who speak French and I’ve decided to learn French myself. You’re absolutely right about offering your skills to a university and I feel useful even though I’m not as published, I’m going to work on that now. Many thanks. X

I love your style Tara! You are so real and brutally honest! I often have this issue that people expect to hear that they are snowflakes and that everybody else, including their employer, is only there to care about their well-being. And of course, if something goes wrong with their contract, their career or their job applications, it's someone else's mistake.

I implemented all of your tips and I am starting my first full time Lecturers role in middle January, which involves a relocation to Brisbane from Sydney (top tip: be prepared to move if you have to!) Love your videos, and thank you very much for helping people and myself. :)

Office of Graduate Research Flinders University so true about moving, I kind of see this attitude as my passport, I’ve taught in four countries so far out of my total of 26 years of teaching and 3 out of those 4 jobs has been me being agile. What the agility brought was increasingly better job offers as recruiters look for the quality of being able to immerse into a new culture etc and yet show a collaborative head. I was safe in South Africa for four years but then emigrated to the UK for 14 years where I taught, then did some teaching in India during their flooding season as a volunteer, but then made a move to Abu Dhabi and it made me embrace a global perspective on teaching. I cannot agree more about moving, I’m British on a passport but international in my teaching career. And I’m enjoying the sunshine right now in Abu Dhabi 😊

Claudia - morning! All systems and institutions have performance expectations - and they do differ. But for me, assembling a personal baseline each year - no matter what - has been useful. The key is to never get anywhere near the level an institution sits for 'research active.' Once academics get close to that line of research inactivity - it is tough to pull it up, particularly quickly. Sustained strong publishing is the key. Much love. Txxx

I am still studying (although coursework can be great because you have to write a lot in a short period of time so that helps!!) But fingers crossed!!! A lot of work I know...but totally worth it! Thank you so much Tara! This was really helpful. Just one follow up question when it comes to publishing - what is the right trade off between publishing more and publishing in top ranking journals? There seems to be a lot of pressure to make sure you get published in top ranked journals - to what extent is this accurate versus having more publications but in lower ranked journals?

Oh Sian - this is the question of the ages. Let me put in the caveats first. Some disciplines are incredibly wedded to the ranking of journals. Some - not at all. If we look at the 'top ranked' journals in law, for example, whole areas of law are not covered. So - do we simply stop researching those areas - like environmental law? Bless. But also, some disciplines, including most of mine, require a relatively rapid turnaround of research, because of its currency. So in my areas - I cannot wait two years for an article to appear. What I recommend for all of us is as follows. Open Access. Every time if you can. Platinum open access. No one pays - author or audience. Then - develop a research plan for five articles. Pick the one or two that can wait a bit and aim for the top tier. But also - find good journals with great refereeing and a strong turnaround time and get some of your articles into that system as quickly as possible. For early career researchers, the situation is critical. If you have nothing out - you won't be in work. So we need to see your published research. That is the first priority. Then work the plan in sets of five articles so that is continual movement, articles appearing and articles under review. Final point too, Sian. I talk a lot about the gatekeepers. Some disciplines have some powerful gatekeepers that run specific journals. We now live in an age where those gatekeepers can be avoided. Ten years ago that was not the case. So work the full suite of open access articles. Final tip from me - publish where the senior people you admire publish. There are certain journals that the big names in the field read - and publish. Publish there :) Hope that helps superstar txxx
