I cab hop and always amazed at the driving positions you find !. I'm also a clean well positioned mirror obsessive and some of the dirty poorly positioned mirrors in relation to the seating position still astounds me. Good job on the reverse, it's always the drivers fault when you hit something so take the decisions away from someone else and GOAL. Still applies years later.

Hi Hayley, Pleased to say I passed my LGV Class 1 today. 10 days training straight from a car licence driving an artic around a very busy Glasgow city centre, Scotland. It seems like an age ago now when I first stumbled on your videos and now the journey to getting the licence is over. I really had to push myself since I don't even drive the car around that much, so I really had to go outside my comfort zone. But it goes to show it is entirely possible. My advice to anyone training: Mirrors mirrors mirrors look into your new road before turning learn how to delay/ reference points for turning the vehicle find the space you need and use it Your eyes move in the direction you are moving the steering wheel Thanks for posting your journey thus far, it gave me a lot of confidence to go for it. Take care Hayley!

People that try and help to reverse but don't stay in your mirrors are a waste of time if they can't see you in the mirror then you can't see them simple,good that you fmdrove in and definitely seemed easier,👌👍

Great video Hayley, that other driver wasn't much cop as a banksman could have done with me there as I trained as a banksman at the scrapyard, I can't comment much as I haven't done my class 1 yet but watching your class 1 training in the wag and drag looked scarey compared to artic but having spoken to one of the wag and drag lads at Perry's recycling it might be easier for me to do my class 1 in wag and drag too🤔 have a good weekend
@michaelthomas3646
@michaelthomas3646 2 жыл бұрын
I think this is swings and round-abouts, never done wag and drag myself, but tend to find the longer the trailer the easier to reverse than a wag and drag, sort of like my car licence allows me to drive with a trailer under automatic grandfather's rights, but not an artic. but yet in reality a car trailer is a lot harder to reverse around a corner than an artic trailer due to the car trailer wanting to turn in a shorter distance and keep wanting to turn rather than reversing straight. I would suggest trying a game like Euro Truck Simulator 2 for the pc before doing it in reality usually find it a lot cheaper than a cup of coffee these days. so around £3-4 on a steam sale. you can use keyboard and mouse, and try reversing both trailer sizes, and you will see what I mean.
@elizabethmaybrown6715
@elizabethmaybrown6715 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelthomas3646 I agree about little car trailers, bit like farm trailers with the axle half way back, they tend to flip round quick but the more axles and the further back they are the easier it is. Can't reverse a little trailer for toffee but a tandem axle 12' trailer tends to go back much better
@TruckDriverHayley
@TruckDriverHayley 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Elizabeth. The wag and drag felt easier believe it or not because the trailer responds faster. Coming from the rigid to the wag and drag was almost exactly the same going forwards but you go a little bit wider around the corners, not like the artic when you have to go a lot wider. So it's more of a familiar feel. Switching to the artic afterwards was a big learning curve, particularly with the reversing. But if you find a company willing to put you with another driver for a few days you'll soon adapt. Whichever you choose I'm sure you'll be fine 😊👍🏻

it is probably doable, but would require a lot more experience in controlling the truck, and the risk of clutch control or lack of makes the chances of an accident even more probable as well, as you would litterally be inches from the buildings on the right at all times shunting back and forth while turning just the cab around (keeping the same position with the trailer) once you got the perfect position, but yeah the driver should have stood not quite directly behind the truck inline with the building on the left, but somewhere in that proximity rather than directly behind the port-a-cabin, which is why you couldn't see him was he was inches behind the building, which makes him a totally useless banks man. because while he can see you are missing the other side, because of the tightness to the port-a-cabin on the left, if he was the other side he can see where your trailer wheels are turning, and also be more aware of the surrounding area rather than watching just one spot in close proximity which gives a tunnel vision view of a situational awareness.
@michaelthomas3646
@michaelthomas3646 2 жыл бұрын
but the truck and trailer would be nearly full on jack-knife at the end of the turn, the thing that you were doing good at was keeping about 3 feet away from the buildings on the right, as that allows the cab to swing around with less shunts, and less of a jack-knife situation. but if it was a manual truck then you would have a clutch to engage and disengage, so that would allow you to be closer to the buildings, and also allow you to know when the clutch is engaged or disengaged meaining more control, and more munouverability, and allow you to be quite litterally inches from objects, less chance of hitting them, and be surprised how little room you actually need to swing the cab around in that situation. as each time you turn the truck the trailer moves back that little bit more.

which is why when reversing in the yard for the first time, you felt like you needed more steering lock with the opposite direction, but the guy telling you to take the steering lock off, and to think about putting the truck to turn the other way so that the cab followed the trailer for direction.

@michaelthomas3646 2 жыл бұрын
@@Matthew-uc3rd 100% respect, absolutely nothing was written in a disrespectful way, or meant to come out in that way. like Hayley nailed it for reversing around the corner on her blindside, but the lack of a good banksman, and not being able to tell when she was going to totally jack-knife the trailer or hit the cabins behind her due to lack of awareness of the situation due to the poor visability of the passenger mirror in this situation meant she was uncomfortable with the whole situation, so instead of continuing she done exactly the right, and safest thing to do, and good side reverse out, whereby she can see exactly what is happening behind her, and no damage to the cab or trailer due to a possible jack-knife. the only thing discusted by was how **** the so called trucker was as a banksman, so that Hayley couldn't see him, and you would have expected him to know being a driver where to position himself so Hayley can see him clearer than behind a port-a-cabin.and once he knew the trailer wheels would clear the building on the left, he didn't need to be near the port-a-cabin on the left, as you can see over the trailer standing on Hayleys good side when to straighten up due to there being nothing obstructing his view due to the trailer being a flatbed.
