I am shocked that people have the audacity to criticize your yard unless you have specifically asked for people's opinion. My gosh, what business is it of anyone's but you and Scott's? I’m not sure if it would help you, but my cousin had that same problem in her yard, but actually much worse. She planted a weeping willow tree there, it sucks up all that water. It’s dry now. It may help. P.S. I don’t think your yard looks like garbage. You have a beautiful home.

I’m American and my family has always used a dishpan. For your drainage area, I would put in French drain and then cover the area with a dry creek bed looking feature with river rock. That way it won’t be muddy and will help divert that water where you want it to go. If the city caused the issue, you and your neighbor might want to consider legal action to get the city pay for your yard repairs.

I think Scott is right about the backyard. The drainage problem isn't going to change, so you can only do what you can do. You can do raised bed gardening which will help you monitor the amount of water for all your plants better. You wont have grass, but not having grass will cut back on spiders and critters. This is free advice... so you get what you pay for. good luck. love your channel.

You have so much on your plate, it's no wonder you are confused about the time change..And as far as people giving you grief over your yard, well some people have nothing better to do than throw stones... I saw your yard in this video and while you do have a drainage problem, I don't think your yard is garbage.. My back yard is not great either but it's mine and that counts for something.. So don't let people bring you down or hurt your feelings over your yard. And you can buy something called GROW BAGS to plant your tomatoes (and other veggies) in and you wont have to plant them in your yard... You could turn your entire yard into concrete and buy the grow bags and still have a beautiful garden... I know you are very busy, but if you get a second to yourself, just research the grow bags... I watch ALOT of homestead videos and I have seen homesteaders use those grow bags to grow some of their veggies in .. And those veggies are BEAUTIFUL.. Ok, now that I have written you a book to read, lol , I will leave you alone.. lol May God continue to bless and keep you and your precious family..

We don't change clocks until November 3, 2019. I don't use a bin for doing dishes I insisted on having a double sink. I remember my aunt having a single sink and I hated doing dishes that way.

I just gave my son a call, he's a Civil Engineer. I sent him the video and asked for his advice. He said its a shame the neighborhood seems to have all the rainwater diverted to the backyards and not to the street. e He can see where this is a great problem. We were discussing reasonable solutions and he said a small "bioretention pond" in the back might help a little. I mentioned a drycreek ditch and he said it might help some. Also if you could put a sort of sub pump in the bottom and pipe the water out to the street. He also mentioned it is very important to keep the water away from the garage and it's foundation as the wetness can"invite" termites and foundation damage. I hope this helps a little!!

I recall my grandmother (many many years ago) had a farm style sink and she always used a basin in the sink. Her purpose was to be able to contain the soapy wash water in a basin and then have the ability to rinse when doing dishes. She did not have a dishwasher so everything was hand washed. I am putting in a new Kohler Neoroc black sink - farm style - this week and I will do the same as my grandmother. (I, however am upgrading to a new dishwasher too! )

Hi Sophia , you may have had this suggestion already but here in the UK we have foam floats our kids use to learn to swim called pool noodles , they are like a foam tube , I don't know if you have them in the US ? You can cut them to the length of your dogs collar & thread it through . It stops her from biting herself as she can't reach but isn't as cumbersome as a cone . Hope this helps 😘❤️

I dont comment usually, but the dish pan subject interests me! I'm 63 yrs. Old and of Irish decent. My family has always used a dish pan but we were always poor as church mice so I doubt it began to avoid damaging our sink. Hiwever, at war time in the UK I'm aware that the citizens were experts at not wasting anything as encouraged by the British government. Yes, the dish water absolutely was used to water small veggie gardens an was also used to do small cleaning jobs outside...maybe cleaning off the brick pathway leading to the front door, etc.

I totally feel your pain and aggravation with running water thru the yard... we have these same issues in our yard when it rains. I live in the country and don’t have the problems of city zoning and govts... but I do have to have the money, time and energy to dig a trench and divert water... that takes effort! Your house is a work in progress. You do lots of things to make improvements... the yard will happen too. I love how your kitchen looks when it’s all tidy and clean.. you give great inspiration. I am like you, I don’t have my “own space” to do all the things I want to do. I care put little corners here and there and make do! Great job Sophia!

We had a dog that did the same thing years ago and 3 vets couldn't figure it out. We tried one last time and were told it was flea allergy. Our dog didn't have fleas. We checked him all over and didn't find any. The vet said some dogs are highly allergic and all it takes is one. He was right in our case. Just had to tell you in case you have a rare dog too. I really like your channel and the fact you're an animal person makes it even better. :)

Where I live runoff is a big problem certain times of year. Perhaps dig out where you want to divert the water and add river rock. Make a faux river. You can make it decorative and attractive. It would be cheaper than the french drain system and less drastic.

I've always kept a wash basin in the sink. Good place to keep the dirty dishes until you get to them. Leaves a good free space in the sink. Tossed my Keurig to the curb, I only use a French press now... The Keurigs are quick, but they're hard to clean. Wow, lots of water in the backyard. Looks like you and your neighbors are sharing a very low spot...hence the puddling. I noticed the water is running downhill from your neighbors yard. Cheapest way I see is to plant some good shrubs around the border of the yard and put down a ton of mulch to keep the neighbors run-off out of your yard. Only other cheap way I see is to dig a trench from the back to the road out front along the fence line. Great vid, house is looking great! Mulch, mulch and more mulch around the borders of your yard. It will keep the neighbors water from draining into your yard and it's cheap. Another cheap solution is to raise the level of the backyard by having some dirt hauled in and plant a ton of grass. Grass eats water fast. Okay, I'm out of ideas.lol Forgot to add...our lil doggy developed an allergy to his food, along with colon problems. He was chewing bare spots around his butt and belly was inflamed. He's getting old, vet said he needed to be on a low fat EN gastroenteric food. The high fat diet was making him miserable and itchy. Purina EN gastroenteric...ain't cheap, but he stopped chewing his butt and belly cleared up. I mix boiled shredded chicken breast in with it to make it go further.

You can grow tomatoes in containers on the porch.

Don't let people upset you most of the time the people who are telling you have worse yards live for you and your family forget about the rest

Sophia, consider using that corner just as your office. With the kitchen decor in mind outfit it as you might a closet office. I personally think that's your solution as its not used as much for anything else. Check with your vet but a lot of dogs suffer from seasonal allergies and they create bald patches that become hot spots. Otherwise it could be a parasite such as fleas. Either way medication could be called for. I adore you and your family including the fur babies, all 3. Thanks for all the inspiration and time you put into your videos.💜

Sophia, You know those cabinet spaces under your counter.... check out "pullout shelves" like your pantry has. (sometimes called sliding, rolling, or rollout). Home depot has some. Your dogs are adorable, I love seeing them in your vlogs. We also had a soggy bottom of our garden, my husband dug a really deep it and filled it with gravel and then grass, it improved it so much. I think Your husband’s idea though 👍

When we lived in the NE, our backyard had underground springs, so when we got rain, it turned into a lake! We couldn't mow the lawn or use a portion of the yard at all. Scott's idea of laying gravel is excellent. You can still grow your tomatoes - just in a raised bed. ;) Container gardening might be best. An office/quilting room will be so nice!!

I like the solution of putting your stuff on the shelf under the counter. It is tucked away but you can get it anytime you sit at the counter. Now you just have the chairs in that corner which looks so much better. Sorry about the water in your yard. That really sucks. Just wondering if your street has good drainage. If so, maybe the water could be directed there. I’m so sorry you have this issue. We had a drainage problem years ago but spent a lot 😫 to fix it.

I like Scott's yard idea. You could arrange it like an English Cottage gardne. Maybe tomatoes would survive in new hardscape planters?

I can see your top soil being washed away. That's why the rain water is that light brown colour. I think your idea of a water garden is a good idea.

I think you will save so much on your heating bills, you can sort out the drainage in your garden very soon. I love to see your Corningware collection, it’s so colourful and reminds me of home.

My husband was a concreter and he says you will need to get a plumber/ drainage contractor to install some large drains to trap the water and run it into either existing roof water/ stormwater drains or install new ones. Will need to get the water out onto the street.

When our son had his last band competition, I cried. It was so sad to me! But when I reminded him that it was his last, he said, "thank God!!!" As much as He had loved band, he was ready for it to end. When you talked about crying at Edward's last competition, it brought back those memories.

Sofia, as a temporary solution you might put a rubber wedge into the swivel mechanism of the chairs so that they remain stationary. The wash basin is a wonderful idea, in the deep sinks at our church we use two tubs, one facing downward and the second one placed on top of it to wash in. By using two it raises the washing level and is much more comfortable on those lower backs. I love your videos. Forget the nay sayers, if they don’t have anything good to say, they shouldn’t say anything at all.

I use vinegar to clean the coffemaker. Our dogs also sit at the door looking at us like we’re nuts, expecting them to go out in the rain!

You need a French drain system to bring the water out to the street drain. You are fortunate you don’t have water in your basement. Our other home had a big water problem in the basement. My husband put in a French drain around the house and diverted the water in the yard and the water from the gutters out to the street drain. Worked like a charm. 😊

The beagle could have a hot spot. My dogs get them when something unusual is happening that makes them unsettled. You can shave the hair off and spray with Cantaspray which will get rid of it really quick

Attach a section of plexiglass to the wall where your chair rubs, it works great and blends in as it's see through.

My grandparents always used a wash basin in their sink. They also dumped their dirty water in the garden. I assumed it was a Depression thing, but that's cool to know that they do that in other countries too.

I’m part of the dog out/oops raining/ back-in/whine group! I also use a dishpan in my sink, but I don’t have a dish washer. The water situation in the yard is a nightmare - I dealt with that when I lived in Missouri and I had to get a landscaping engineer to come do some major work, grading, filling, French drain....it was pricey...but thankfully the builder end up paying the bill on both my house and my neighbors.

A bowl in the sink for me is just one more thing that needs cleaning. I watched a sewing channel their pet also had a wound at the same place on it's rear end when taken to the vet it turns out the pet had been bitten. House is looking so good. When the boys move out your bedroom would be great as a sewing room it's out of the way no need to leave the room all day with the on suite and at the end of the day you can just come down the stairs and close the door.

I used vinegar to descale my glass kettle - does a great job....and the dog with the lampshade on his neck was making me laugh everytime he hit the camera stand - gave me a great chuckle.....

I think you need to call in an expert to figure out where that much water is coming from, and what possible solutions are. This looks like a lot of water is coming from your neighbors yard into yours. There may be city laws regarding how and how much water can be diverted down your driveway to a storm sewer, but perhaps a buried drain in rocks along the far side of the garage to the street. That’s a heck of a lot of water!

Yep washing up bowls everywhere here in Britain, My foreign flatmates look at them as though they are a strange thing. You can slosh half-drunk cups of tea etc down the side to go down the plughole instead of making the water brown! A washing up bowl is often used as all sorts of other things too like emergency leak catcher and vomit bowl, yuck, lol!!

I have an idea for your kitchen office. If you were to sell both kitchen stools and buy one good stool for the counter, that would enable you to have the space in front of the lower shelves open. It would make it easier to put away paperwork or you could slide your teal cart into that space! I believe in making your space work for you and where you are in your life right now. I believe having just the 1 stool would facilitate that. By the way, I am one of the ones who loves to watch you clean. I came home tired and unmotivated. Then I heard my husband was working late and wouldn't be home until 730pm. That made me VERY unmotivated. I watched your video and now I'm ready to tackle my kitchen table, which is full of "survival mode drop and go" clutter. Thank you for all you do to keep us motivated, Sophia.

Hi Sophia, for your kitchen office area, google "drafting table chair" then click on images. They are tall comfortable office chairs for long hours and they have foot support. Perhaps just get one chair that you love, and is of high quality.

I really know what you are dealing with. You should have seen our mess when remodeling and it was bad. Water everywhere making ponds and streams. My husband is in construction and he put in field and drain lines himself and fixed the problem. Now and then with downpours we'll have a little but not much. If people say stuff its because they don't live the real hard working life. Love these kind of videos. Take care.
