This is really helpful, thanks for putting it together. You've filled in some gaps from the knowledge that we've slowly been gaining by harassing your support team!

What bad happens if you put your capture card to the chipset connected PCIe?

Foot in mouth for my deleted comment. Looks like I made a mistake in my build last year by choosing the "Asus PRIME X570-P" instead of the "Asus PRIME X570 Pro". The PCI-E lanes are a significant difference between these two. Looks like we got lucky that we can still add 1 capture card, albeit via the chipset.

Sorry but you forget to mention pcie ssd which can reduce number of lanes if you use it on the same motherboard. Pcie storage can take 2x 4x or 8x lanes. So this is very important when you are making replay system with 8 cams and fast pcie ssd storage.

i think the new blazing fast DMI 4.0 x8 connections between cpu and chipset on z690/z790 and H-series should eliminate the problem for capture cards in chipset slots?

have you found a solution? I'm looking for the same setup, 2 BMD capture cards (one HDMI, one SDI), 8 PCIe lanes each...

Question: If you have a good motherboard based on X570 or Z690 with a PCIe switch or bifurcation and drop in one x16 card (GPU) in the first slot and an x8 card (capture) in the second slot, they will both operate at x8, right? But what happens when the GPU is PCIe 4.0 and the capture card is PCIe 2.0? Will the slower capture card force the GPU into x8 PCIe 2.0 as well, or can it still utilize the full PCIe 4.0 bandwidth?

That's a tough one. I think Britney, although it's a close call. Her era with the Neptunes production puts her over the edge for me.

So, from your exhalted position in this universe... can you see a justifiable reason for putting a partially-connected PCIe socket on a board? What do x16 cards do if you put them in a half-x16 slot? Just run as x8? Or fail to work?

Hi Christoffer, I just went through this. Thunderbolt 3/4 only supports 4 lanes of PCIe. So, you won't get 40 g's through it, unless you use cards that are PCIe Gen 2 or higher. that only use 4 lanes. And you have to be careful not to accidentally get a card that does support the resolution and FPS that you need. If your card is Gen 1, like the Black Magic Quad Recorder, it's an 8 lane, so you'll only get 22 g's per sec. I checked that number with Sonnet and they said it was true. Note: They warn about that in their website. I'm sure somethings might go at the intended speed. Elgato's 4K HDMI Pro quad, is 4-lane and it's PCIe Gen 2.0. But, it can't do 4K 60 fps. It can only do 4K 30. But, with the combo of my Mac Mini MI 16gb, and a correctly specked Sonnet, I ran into awful lag problems with the Black Magic. I went to the MAC store and they were like, 6 cameras?, Get a PC. So, I went to my 9 year old PC, plugged my Decklink Quad Recorder directly into one of the PCIe slots, and my problems dissapeared--at least at the 1080 30 setting that my cameras were on and failing at on the Mac. (I'm running 6 cams. So, I want to add another card. Plus, I want to record 4K 60 with vMix with all 6 cams if possible, with automated overlays, etc. So, I think I'm going to get forced into one of these 3 PCIe slot motherboards. Like the ASUS Pro Art. It has the most PCIe, thunderbolt 4, and USB 3.2 IO of any Asus, except one or more of the Asus pro's. And the Pro board with the most slots that I'm remembering from earlier today, costs over 5K. I started trying to solve these issues with no experience starting in November. It's resulted in me migrating back to windows, and also stopping my video production while I solve this. It's been an education, I wish someone would have hipped me up to what was hurtling toward me. There are companies that make breakaway boxes that use Fiber. But the cards are over a grand. And the breakout sisterboards, that are actually very big, cost thousands. But, they look like the future to me for sure. Unless motherboards start showing up with PCIe slots, again. Frustrating. I might have to use one 4 way HDMI, and one Elgato CamLink 4K (30 fps), and my last camera using straight USB. BEST OF LUCK. Let me know if you hit UREKA so I can steal your solution(s). :) Lots of Laughs & Learning --Ned

just stick with X299 if you get right board and cpu, you will have plenty of lanes.

I test my PCIe cards pretty rigorously. The primary test is, throwing it like a Frisbee from, across the room, having it land solidly seated in an 8x or greater PCIe slot. Some modern cards have better weight balance and heft. Others, are simply too light, and tend to float, striking either my cat, my dog or my dumb wife, who ignores me when I tell her to get out of my office. Magewell multi hdmi cards have fared the best in my testing, but the SDI models should be avoided. The worst cards are the ElGato 4k GameCapture and the AverMedia Gamer 4k. They are difficult to aim, and I had one hit my RTX a5000 GPU. I swear the nvidia card yelled out a racial slur when the card hit it. Cats have great eyesight, so after finally getting a card mounted (it took 3,333 attempts!), I connected my BMCC 6k, and asked the cat what it thought. First, the cat said nothing, then it hacked up a hairball, plus the tail of a mouse or rat it had caught. My dog was much more helpful though, it barked, raised its hind leg, and pissed all over my leg. if anyone wants to see some video of this testing, I will reshoot, seems I forgot to wear any clothes during these dangerous tests.
