How to configure rdm (Raw Device Mapping) in VMware
Welcome back Guys, Todays Session will cover the following topics about Raw Device Mapping (RDM)
-Why do we use RDM?
Quorum Disk for Microsoft Clustering
SQL Databases
Failover SQL / Cluster with Active-Passive mode required RDM
-Diffrent types of Raw Device Mapping (RDM)
Physical -Raw Device Mapping (PRDM)
Virtual -Raw Device Mapping (VRDM)
We can add a new storage controller to separate VMDK and RDMS
Compatibility mode Virtual or Physical
What is Compatibility Mode?
Physical - Allows the guest OS to access the hardware directly.
No Snapshots can be taken of P-RDM
Virtual - Allows the Virtual Machine to use VMware Snapshots and other advanced functionality.
RDM Must be located on a separate SCSI Controller
Use a different SCSI BUS to the current virtual disks ( VMDKS)
example
SCSI (1:0) -for first RDM
SCSI (1:1) - for the second RDM

If i want to provision an RDM to VM, Then the LUN shouldn't be a Data Store?

Yes it should be provision to the hosts and have to be added as a lun do not provision it as a data store.

In the same example you did, how do you extend a shared rdm disk on MS cluster?

Hi Ibrahim I have question. I have an old structure as exactly as you describe it in your video and it works correctly. (With out SCSI bus sharing (physical)) and I did not configure it. I want to started new fail over cluster with 2 nodes. If I do not enable SCSI bus sharing (physical) in the nodes the second node cannot be powered on. And I got this error that the disk is locked by first node. In my old structure a VMDK was made per every VMs that map to the RDM but in my new structure only one VMDK was made that map to the first node. Therefore, I have to use SCSI bus sharing (physical). I would appreciate it If you could help me why I cannot make my new structure like as old structure. And which ones is better?

Great video. Do RDM always need to be block based storage and do you set up the networking to access that block based storage the same way you would for a datastore, only without adding the datastore?

Yes, we should not provision the datastore.

Hi Ibrahim, thx for your sharing, I have one tricky questions, - RDM can be added to VM on the very first try only, - From that, more RDM can't be added or can't even remove the configured RDM from the VM. - To add multiple RDM, I can only add all of them at the same time at very first try. ERROR shows : PBM error occurred during PreReconfigureCallback: Fault cause: vmodl.fault.SystemError Do you know any possible reason?

Always power off the VM add the RDM on to the primary node then do the mapping file which is adding the disk to the secondary vm by browsing the existing hard-disk of the RDM.

Hi Ibrahim, very informative video. However I have one doubt. Iam running one sql cluster on two windows 2016 standard nodes. I have two rdm disks shared to both with physical compatibility. Iam able to take snapshot of both vms. Could you explain how it's happening.

You have to add them as virtual pass through mode. The snapshot will be only for the c drive the RDM are not going to protected by snapshots. You might need to ask your sql admin to backup the sql or SAN admin to snapshot the rdm from storage if the option is available from storage technology.

So to summarise Raw disks and RDM physical mode disks do not support VMware snapshots. However, RDM (Raw Device Mapping) with virtual compatibility mode supports snapshots.
