Come along as we go through a normal processing day on our small, organic, regenerative dairy farm. We start with morning barn chores and milking cows. Then take about four hours to pasteurize and bottle milk. Just when we are done processing, it is time for evening chores. Good work and great views make us happy farmers. Thanks for all your support and comments!

I grew up on a small Wisconsin dairy farm. I've always felt that it is indeed possible to flourish (modestly) with a small herd of well-managed cows. I'm an old man now and I was never able to make that dream a reality for myself, so I'm glad to see you folks actually making it happen. Hats off to you, bravo! Managing a small herd of dairy cows is, to me, the highest art of agriculture. I would love to come for a visit some day. Stay well and keep on keeping on.

We definitely need more support (mentors, land grant college research, access to funding, small affordable equipment) for small farms. It really is about rebuilding farming communities and food security. There will always be a place for mega-farms but that should not be the default or the ideal. Thanks for your support!

Very very nice setup you folks have there and the parlour is top notch. The one thing I’d like to mention that I noticed and I got this advice from an old cattleman in northern BC. Keep a sharp pair of scissors or a razor knife handy at the milking stall or squeeze so you can trim the tail hair just below the tail. As you can guess it keeps a lot of things a lot cleaner and in the colder temperatures it cuts down on the buildup.

You guys are doing great! I grew up on my grandparents farm. And farmed & milked cows with my brother until 2011, but continued to own show cattle. Now that I have children of my own, I'd love to do what you guys are sharing with the milk cows we own, which is 3 with 6 head of young stock. We have 20 acres, and want to build a new barn. What are your recommendations if you were to build again?
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 3 жыл бұрын
We are really happy with how the barn works. The only change I would make is maybe a dedicated utility room. The water heater is in the processing room, which is fine, but the vacuum pump is a bit annoying in the parlor. Actually, I’m currently building a “pump hut” to move it out of there, but a separate room would have been ideal. That said, I’m not sure where I would have put it! Haha! Thanks for watching! Wishing you the best on your barn build. It’s a lot of work, but so wonderful to have a nice place to work!

When you get more cows will you use two milker’s
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 3 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed. With just three cows right now, it’s not worth dirtying up a second set of everything. Eventually we plan to add a pipeline too.

What does A2 genetics mean
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! It concerns the protein in the milk. Some people with sensitivities to milk find they can digest A2 milk better. We made an entire video on it where you can learn more: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/grKfgbKXqMubZKs.html

Why you don't milk two cows in ones.
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! We’re only milking three right now, so it’s not worth it to us to dirty up (and then clean) a second stall, second bucket, and second milker right now. We’re right on the cusp though, so next year milking four we’ll probably use both stalls. Thanks for watching!

Do you only milk once a day?
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 3 жыл бұрын
We milked once a day for the last part of the lactation during this last season. It was great! Next season we plan to milk once a day for much longer. Check out the video we made reviewing our once a day milking experience: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdBndbBh3NzbnJc.html

I presume you’re referring to the Bar-Maid? It’s made by Bar-Maid, and they also supply the milk bottle brushes. We don’t really use it anymore though. We can wash bottles just as fast, if not faster by hand. Thanks for watching!
