I actually have both of these mic's myself. I got the 103 around 10 years ago, and the 416 last month. Both are very competent microphones having excellent acuity and a similar presence boost and proximity effect, but the tighter pattern of the 416 makes it work better in my 6x6' Whisperroom, which has some issues that I haven't been able to conquer acoustically...yet. I'm working on that. Thanks for the fair comparison! It confirmed what I had already believed from my own experience with them.

Thanks, Fernando Godinez. Since writing this, I was able to nail down the issue. I already had acoustic panels I made from Owens-Corning 703, which got rid of most flat echoes; but it turned out to be that the corners were reinforcing/amplifying the bass. So...bass traps! Now I’m very happy with the sound of the booth, and can freely use either the 103 or the 416 in it. I’m finding I like the 416 a little better, and now using it most of the time. But of course, that’s just me. Again, thanks for responding!

Fernando Godinez: When using the both the 103 and the 416, I’m probably running around 30 degrees off-axis. The real difference between the two is (not surprisingly) the distance. The 103 works well now at around 6-8 inches (with a Pop Audio fabric pop filter), whereas the 416 I run at more like 12-15 inches, no pop screen required. I prefer not to get too close to either mic, so as to minimize proximity effect. My preamp is an Apollo Twin Mk II Duo feeding into a Mac Mini, running Adobe Audition. I should add that I used to run further off-axis, but found the sound just a little less natural; a bit more muffled. Mic technique is everything with the 416.

By the way, if you'd like to hear a sample of what my rig sounds like using the MKH 416, try this: www.edgestudio.com/script/94142#recording-102341 Would love some feedback! Thanks, Fernando.

Thanks, Fernando, I really appreciate the encouragement. I have thought about doing some helpful/explanatory videos on technical topics (I’m an Engineer by Day!) like the signal chain, and all the components in it, what they do, available settings and what *they* do, etc., and their implications for equipment buying and usage. In my technical career, I’ve done a lot of writing and illustration also, so am perhaps in a unique position to communicate these things effectively. Stay tuned!

I love your channel! Thanks a lot for making this video, I had a TLM 103 in the past but I sold it. Now I purchased the MKH 416 and I could not be happier. It works really well on my voice. Thanks a lot for the video and keep up the great work!

I used to have a 416 & was worried it was "too aggressive" sounding to be my daily mic. I found that simply by positioning, I was able to make it work for everything I voiced. Then, due to being in a silly phase of buying & selling gear, I got rid of it...doh! Years later, I'm looking to get one back :)

Bummer. That is just so basic to mic usage. Too bad someone didn’t tell you. I have the 416, and I HAD the TLM and found I had to struggle to find the sweet spot for mic positioning and acoustics. The 416 rejects all other sounds and acoustics.

When you want your movie to sound like a movie you use the mkh416 (or mkh50), It's basically a long range TLM 103 (That's why movie dialogue sounds the way it does)
@MarkVO
@MarkVO 2 жыл бұрын
My perception is that overall you might want a TLM 103 if your space is acoustically "perfect". Otherwise the MKH 416 will be more forgiving and yes, if you need to be visible on camera it gets out of the way while still picking up your voice well.

Do you think the TLM102 is noisier and has more bass then the TLM103?
@LoKnows
@LoKnows 6 жыл бұрын
Hey FunnyGuy Timmy, ive seen your stuff pop randomly on my main page. Nice to see you drop by, just subbed to you. I recently used the TLM102 the other a couple of weeks ok on a project. And i came away with the same impression, it did sound bassier, couldn't tell you about the noise though, it was in a vocal booth. I thought the bassiness was because of the closed environment and wearing the monitoring headphones, but now that you mentioned it, i wouldn't be surprised if that was the case

Thanks for the sub. I have been listening to a lot of videos and few if any do shootouts of the TLM 103 vs the TLM 102 on flat vocals so am having a hard time finding out exactly what the difference is. I may have to rent one some day. Thanks for the reply. Love the channel.

Thanks for this comparison. I have the 416 but I was honestly thinking about selling it to try out the tlm. I just can't help but feel I'm processing my audio wrong. I use a dbx 286s into a yamaha mg12xu mixer. Any suggestions how I could increase the quality of my voice overs with this equipment and the 416?
@RohithNamboothiri
@RohithNamboothiri 5 жыл бұрын
Hey @playlets Since I own all the equipments you mentioned, let me tell you, the USB Interface that Yamaha MG12XU offers is pathetic. You should try connecting your DBX to a better audio interface such as Audient ID4 or higher. Even a 2i2 will do justice to sound quality compared to MG12XU.

Could you tell me whats the NRC of that recording space? Because It´s important to know it to decide wich t is better or worst for yours or for my voice. I think if that space has some special acoustics for singing I´d choice the 416. I think the MKH416 should sounds more clear than the TLM 103 in my vocal booth desing for voice over. I think the Neuman TLM 103 sounds more boosted for yor voice, but the MKH 416 has a beautifull sound for voiceover or working as announcer. I watched other showdown between this two microphones with special acoustics for voice over and I felt in love with the MKH416. Now, I do not know wich I´d choice if I´d have the money. I will have enough time to decide what I will choose when I get the money, I think It could be the MKH416 ´cause I could use it in my vocal booth and it´d give me less noise if I need to use it out of my vocal booth. I think the MKH 416 will work well when I finish to desing my vocal booth with special acoustic for voice over.
@LoKnows
@LoKnows 6 жыл бұрын
Danny Marquez I couldn’t tell you the NRC number but there is still some voice slap back when some reads ask for louder read. I personally would not consider the MKH416 for singing. While you probably could get away with it. You are going to loose the warmth of a persons voice and it will come out a little to harsh. The 416 has just enough bite for VO to make the vocals standout. IMO

I have one Sennheiser MKH 416 for voiceover, but I want to have a separate microphone for when I’m reading with another person. Should I buy another 416, or I want Neive TLM103, should I buy that instead? (I rather have one of each). Your thoughts.

Ehhh I can turn the 416 away from the ac all I want and it'll still pick up the sound! Greatly diminished, of course. I record in a portable booth when im on the go, and the 416 seems to be a very poor combination with it. Hoping the tlm will perform better

I mean, dude, it's a nice review, but you don't have to explain for 20 minutes that it's a super-directional mic. Your video could be 3 minutes and straight to the point. And maybe next time when you're mentioning "Hollywood standards", connect this thing to a Hollywood standard amp, not to a Zoom :-)
