VOA Interview: Mahathir says Malaysia Suffering from Financial 'Destruction'

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, back in power after a 15-year hiatus, says his first 20 years in office were “fairly easy” compared to what is confronting him now - massive debt in a country with an international reputation for corruption.
Mahathir returned to power on May 9 in a spectacular election upset that saw him unite with his former opposition foes to overthrow a prime minister - Najib Razak - who is accused of helping to steal billions from his country in one of the biggest corporate frauds in history. Najib denies all the charges.
“Well my first 20 years as prime minister was fairly easy. I inherited a system that is already there. All I had to do is to introduce new ideas so that we can expedite the growth and development of Malaysia,” the 92-year-old Mahathir told VOA in an exclusive interview.
“But here I am dealing with a country that has been actually destroyed. Its finances have been destroyed. The system of government has been ignored and not used and a new system, or rather an authoritarian system has been introduced,” he said.

I am not interested in politics at all, but here is a man who built a world class nation with love and will. Incredible Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

At 93 years old...he is literally risking life and limb to steer the country back on course. He could very well have chosen to retire and to call it a day. He is the ultimate statesman...we are lucky to have him. Lets make the best of what our country has to offer.

Dr Mahathir is NOT a dictator or an authoritarian ruler HE IS A VISIONARY. He knows what has to be done because he had a vision for Malaysia. A vision for our country that no other prime minister had for Malaysia. He knew his goals for M'sia and it was 2020 vision but it was ruined due to the other 2 prime ministers after him was useless. Literally destroyed the country. In my personal opinion, Malaysia could have an amazing country by now if he weren't to resigned, Imagine all the plans he had to realise the '2020 vision' for Msia. There is no other PM like Dr Mahathir .. Dr Mahathir is a leader with vision, a strategist, transparency, truth and honesty in his position as PM, most importantly he never abuse power. A leader must never abuse power n thats why in Dr Mahathir we must trust.

Yet he still the best PM we had ever have. He knew what we need, and back then what we need most is stability and economic opportunity, and he provided that in the period that. He's the person you would like to captain the team, to sailor the ship.

Nabilah, In the West most major news media. like CNN,NBC and many others are bought by people with big money. Most of the leaders in govt are not really voted in by the people but already appointed and bought over. it cost a lot of money to run an election. It looks like this is world wide and the east is not spared. This time in Malaysia,it is the citizen that propels this current leadership. Very Rare. In 1997 these currency manipulators using the media tried to bring down the south East Asian currency. We were very fortunate that Tun M stopped the outflow of fund and that spoiled their plans for raping Malaysia. That is where the dictator story is being concocted by these toxic, corrupt currency manipulators and the media.

Need to get intelligent reporters not people that repeat the same silly questions. This man has to get all our support. We should not allow him to be pressured. Just let him do what he has come to do and go back into retirement. Only he has the masala to put Msia back on track. People who challenged him like Najib, Nazri and Zahid have been proven wrong and should now show respect and behave themselves. This poor man is the only one that could have helped the opposition win. If not for him lets face it Najib would never have fallen and the rape of Malaysia would still be going on. He is the peoples choice so lets all stand up for him and give him all our support. Just look at him. People love him. Malaysia loves him.

I beg to differ with Dr M with regard to his statement that we should help the poor from a certain race so that they are not left behind by other races. I am sure Tun is a well learned man and knows that being poor does not confined to certain race only. It encompasses all races! The government should extend help to all poor Malaysians irrespective of race! The fact that we see the poor being mostly malays is because malays make up almost 70% of the population. There are also numerous poor non-malays but their numbers being relatively smaller due to their much smaller population and are scattered. Besides they are so used to being sidelined by the previous government that they basically tried to survive on their own. Life gets harder with increasing costs of living over the last few years with the removal of various subsidies and then the GST. Try managing a family of 4 with Rm2000 or even RM3000 a month in big cities and you will see what I meant. I don't mean to offend anybody. Just my two cents worth.

The Arabization of the Moslem is a trend which is flourishing everywhere. I don't agree with it because Moslems are not a Monolith! they are several cultures within the Ummah and each deserves respect. Also, the Wahhabi interpretation of Islam or the Iranian version is very strict and may lead to sectarianism which Malaysia must avoid at all costs. SE Asian Moslems are peaceful and well behaved tolerant human beings. That is how it should always be! SAY NO TO EXTREMISM.

Where else when the chairman is a non-malay than the board of directors must be majority malays. The government police, military, AG & justice, treasury, auditors, glc, statutory board company, must be represented from all sector of the society in order to act neutral and without fear or favor. Manage the media well please, Dr.M. Malaysia is very wealthy with cocoa, shell fish, vegetable oils, oil, gas, timber, huge semi conductors fab, big proportion of test, pack & burn in. There is also a large disc drives, steel fabrications, nearly 1.2 million equivalent car parts and car assembly. Malaysia is also a large furniture industry, electrical appliance, the world first synthetic fuel plant in the 1990's, as well as a equipment port in the 30 to 40 million TEU in 2 location. Our international airport handles 60 million flights........ .....but the Najib Barisan administration is prone to misadministration. It started with Dr. M who now agreed to dismantle the abuses. Dr.M apologized to the Malaysian people and now become the consultant to the Pakatan new government on resolving the issue. (Government debt = credit creation. Only issue is how sustainable are these credit is generated) Let's work on the rectification now.

Malaysia should really take an aggressive action in creating more opportunities for its citizens, regardless of race and religion. However, the laws and policies inherited from the British empire are very divisive in nature in a way that it created gaps between the races, be it socially, politically, and economically. Why do have schools based on your race? In my opinion, a good school should consist of all races and religions, so that we malaysians may learn and adapt from and to each other at an early age

@@kenag2706 with due respect sir, i can't quite agree to your statement of changing the policies in total because of the social contract that we all we bound to when we were to get our independence from the British. it was all quite clear back then. i bet you know about the Jus Soli. Besides, all the special previleges of the malay are well protected in the Federal Constituion, the supreme law of the land.

at this age and era with an interview conducted with an important figure such as current PM of Malaysia, the audio quality of this interview poor. Whoever produced the audios for this interview should be highly critical of his work. Otherwise, he /she shouldn't be allowed to be in the same room with the PM. Such quality of audio production is very appalling.

Malaysia has highest number of civil servant in the world with one civil servant in every 19.37 people all najibs and badawi's fault, i assume, but this was snowballing from the 80s - indicating that the civil service is large relative to the country’s population. Commenting on the matter, Second Finance Minister Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani said the bloated civil service of 1.6 million has caused government expenditure to increase each year, leading to the gradual drop in revenue. “When I first entered the cabinet, the country was facing a variety of dilemmas - floating oil prices led to reduced government revenue, ringgit devaluation, high living costs and political controversies - which have made my work more challenging. “One of the issues that we have to address is the ever-increasing government operating costs and expenses. For example, we have about 1.6 million civil servants, which is the world’s largest proportion of civil service,” Johari told The Oriental Daily. Explaining further, the minister said the ratio is one civil servant to 19.37 people based on the country’s current population of 31 million people, Johari, however, stressed that the government had no plan to reduce the number of civil servants despite the soaring of remuneration and pensions to the civil servants. In comparison, the proportion of civil servants to the national population in other countries such as Singapore is 1 to 71.4 people; Indonesia 1:110; Korea 1:50, China 1:108, Japan 1:28, Russia 1:84 and United Kingdom 1:118, according to a recent survey.
