On today's podcast, Dan Novak and Ashley Thompson host the show while Dan tells listeners what they will be hearing. First, John Russell has a report that says Mexico surpassed China as the top exporter to the U.S. this year. Part of the reason is that tariffs on Chinese goods remain in place. Also, after the pandemic, some companies have moved to find new sources for some supplies. The drop in U.S. imports from China were notable in electronics, chemicals and drugs.
Then, Dan Novak has a story on a proposal by two scientists to have a new, Category 6 for hurricanes because they expect windspeed to be higher in new, more powerful ocean storms. They say this is because of climate change. However, the most dangerous element of ocean storms is water, not wind.
After that, Bryan Lynn has a report on NASA's successful launch of its PACE ocean and weather satellite. PACE is expected to spend three years observing the world's oceans and atmosphere. The goal is to measure sea levels around the world. The mission also aims to observe the growth of phytoplankton in the oceans. Another instrument will measure particles in the air, or aerosols. The 3-year project is expected to cost more than $950 million dollars.
Then, Bryan talks with Dan about what scientists hope to gain from PACE satellite. Bryan notes that the instruments are able to "see" more colors than earlier satellites.
Finally, on Lesson of the Day, Andrew Smith and Jill Robbins use VOA's video series Let's Learn English to teach about how to use and understand reported speech, which comes up more than many people think.
Then Ashley and Dan sign off.
