Guards at India-Pakistan Border Perform Independence Day Ceremony

Pakistan and India border guards take part in a daily ceremony at the Wagah border post as Pakistan celebrates the 75th anniversary of its independence, August 14, 2022.
Crowds go wild and soldiers goose-step in a chest-puffing theatrical ritual symbolizing the countries' antipathy after independence, but the display ends with a brisk, brotherly handshake.
Several hours before the ceremony, enthusiastic spectators begin trickling into sitting areas on either side of chunky iron gates separating the nuclear-armed Asian rivals at the Attari-Wagah frontier.
India and Pakistan, which celebrate 75 years of independence from Britain next week, share deep cultural and linguistic links but their history has been mired in violence and bloodshed.
They were partitioned in 1947 into predominantly Hindu India and Muslim-majority Pakistan against the backdrop of communal massacres and the movement of millions of people. (AFP) #pakistan #india #wagahborder #voanews

I went to see this in 2014 whilst in Pakistan. It was quite extraordinary. What I really loved was the friendly banter between the people of both countries immediately after the ceremony ended

@midloran banter is like friendly talking back and forth. Sometimes involving playful jokes or ribbing at someone, but only because you know your friend won't take the joke in a bad way. Like this Friend 1:" your dancing was ugly, but it's getting better. I'm proud of you 🤣🤣🤣" Friend 2: if my dancing is ugly, blame your mom, she's the one that taught me how to dance🤣🤣🤣. Both friends end up laughing, knowing it's just playful banter. I hope that helps. 💯🤗 🇺🇲🫡

Don't be fooled..Indians and Pakistanis are one people. These are theatrics for the populace to keep the myths of enmity alive. 75 years ago we were mauling each other over our separation. Hearts and lives were ripped out. Our politicians are still living off our basest instincts. But ordinary people get along just fine.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. There are already strong and stable ties between Western countries (e.g. NATO, EU), and the level of religious and ethnic tolerance is higher in the West than any other parts of the world. I say this as a foreigner living in the West.

Wow… to be honest, by looking at the thumbnail, I’ve thought this is going to look funny and unserious… but actually, I find it to be exiting and dynamic! Really cool, and more natural than the parades you see in western countries… Today Poland celebrates its independence day, but every country has its own story regarding their independence. The smile on both the soldiers' faces as they shake hands reflects the actual love and respect between the common citizens of both countries. Together we can overcome all enmity and encourage healthy competition and cultural exchange between both these wonderful countries. Смотрел в Ютубе эту-же церемонию, только снятую более 15 лет назад. Есть видимые изменения. Раньше военнослужащие обеих стран глядели друг на друга с настоящей ненавистью, рукопожатие офицеров через границу было презрительным с обоих сторон. Сейчас обе стороны просто выполняют формальные действия, ритуал не изменился, но обе стороны больше внимания уделяют красоте движений, а не запугиванию противника. Даже по этому ритуалу видно, что напряжённость между странами снизилась, и это замечательно. А ритуал красивый, недаром там столько зрителей с обоих сторон.
