In my view, the thing that held him back, or rather the rendition, was that he was a little off on the accent. That takes away the charm, the emotional engagement a bit. Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle were both just unbelievable with Indian languages. Still, they didn't sound good on whatever English tracks they sang because they were totally off on the accent. If a legend from the West tried singing in an Indian language, the same would happen to them. On a different note, I would love you to react to "Jab Jab Tumhe Bhulaaya" from Jahan Ara. The classical perfection of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle is something to be marvelled at. Folks wouldn't have heard of it because it is almost from a long-forgotten age. But literally, both legends Lata and Asha are at their absolute peak. I cannot recall another specimen for their repertoire's sheer singing artistry. And that is saying something!! Also, Mohd Rafi is someone you will love listening to, and I don't think you have reacted to him. Manna Dey too.
