The magic of Tool is that Maynard lays the vocals to the songs after the instrumental portion of the song is already played and that is how the songs are created. It really is two separate pieces like you mentioned. I've been listening to Tool since like 1991 and it has been the musical journey that I appreciate more than any other band I've ever listened to.

i don't think she realizes how long it took (in years between albums) to get from Undertow, to Aenima, to Lateralus, and then to 10,000 Days, that's a lot of passing time, growing and changing. of course his vocals have changed from the live "Sober" video she watched previously. What is funny is you can she is in the groove and she is hooked. another TOOL fan has just emerged from the depths of innocence.

@yewknight I've tried writing and recording music and a lot of the time the vocalist and the vocal tracks take precedent in how the song is received or appreciated. A great vocalist will carry mediocre instrumentalists and great instrumentalists will carry mediocre vocalists, but Tool has both a great vocalist and great instrumentalists which allows Maynard to step back and let the music breathe. I'm a huge Avenged Sevenfold fan and I love the album 'City of Evil' but I still think that M. Shadows sings too much on that album because he might have been trying to show off his new and improved and vocal coach instructed singing voice.

Like she is saying "I shouldn't indulge, but i cant help myself." Love it :) Anything Maynard touches from his other bands A Perfect Circle or Puscifer is just absolutely brilliant. You'll need to listen to Culling Voices on their latest album for those vocals. Personally, my favourite vocals from Maynard are on the 'Pushit - Live' track from their Salival album. You nailed it. That's why Maynard never takes centre stage but instead takes to 'lurking', around the edges of lights or Backlit. Pretty damned accurate of you to pick this up on the second song and probably earned you a lot of respect from many a die hard fan, myself included. I will definitely pop back to see your future reviews, would love to hear your thoughts on Lateralus. Cheers, Lee.

I think they are maybe slightly more than average complex in their genre, but what they do better than literally any band is weave complexity and simplicity and uncertainty and closure in such a perfect way. I think it takes a lot of skill to be technically complex, like dream theatre and rush and them, but to be able to do that and have it sound so effortlessly beautiful and still artistic is what only gods can do. And they are as close to gods as human can get

A small detail I appreciate: starting just after 13:26, Maynard's transition to more of a legato style as the guitars slow down for just a brief moment is aural ecstasy.

Accurate! It's my understanding the band builds the music and then Maynard creates the lyrics on top of a finished product, hence the layered finish you hear. It's brilliant! Watching a reaction video to their music almost makes me want to cry because every song is so emotional. As I get older, it gets less emotional and these videos tend to reinvigorate that feeling. I am more of a stoic and serious type personality and Maynards voice speaks for me in ways that I cannot. Its Angelic. He and the band encapsulate all of my emotions hidden away inside. They have a way of finding them.

It was interesting watching you recognize the voice in the mix not stand out front. Most Tool songs feature this method. Anyone who’s watched a Tool concert in last 20 or so years can tell you Maynard stands in the back next to the drums in the shadows and delivers epic performances. Along with the rest of the guys. Pretty equal footing usually.

Great reaction. One of the things I love about not only you, but many of the vocal coaches that do reactions like this is that your love for music in general is palpable. If it's any consolation, the first time `I` heard this, I barely realized there even WAS vocals! I was so transfixed by not only the bass line, but the drums. The vocal melody came through, but not much else. It wasn't until I heard it a couple of times that I really started paying attention to his vocals and the lyrical content for that matter. He has such an incredibly unique style of singing, so it was fun to see you break it down.

it's so fun to watch someone listen to tool for the first time. The eyes of confusion, the smiles of surprise and of "is this really happening?" are so great to see lol You can take your time as well. We know tool songs are complex and have a lot to unpack. Don't worry about being "only halfway through the song", we don't mind. It this was 45 minutes I'd watch it just the same. I'd suggest on the next tool song you listen, listen it for the first time from beginning to end, just to have a feel for it. Then you go back at it stopping whenever you feel necessary. You'll have a better notion of the nuances of the song and of how it began and how it ended, what impressed you, and you'll also notice a lot of things you didn't the first time. I'm not saying it's bad going like you did, just making a suggestion :)
