This style of singing is called qawwali and Nusrat was known as the "Shahenshah-e-Qawwali" or "Supreme Ruler of Qawwali". His vocal range was well over four octaves and he was extremely prolific. The group surrounding him are not background singers. To his left is Farrukh, his younger brother and widely regarded as on par with Nusrat in vocals as well as the primary composer and arranger of the songs sung by the group. Farrukh's son is Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who accompanied the group in Nusrat's later years. The other men are his students and various instrumentalists who had been part of the qawwali tradition in one way or another for generations. Qawwali is a Sufi tradition where songs are used to express one's love for the divine, and frequently turn on a phrase or sentence (a motif, as you called it) that is then expanded and expounded on in various ways, both technical and emotional. The way qawwali concerts (and most classical concerts in India) are structured lend themselves to a constant call-and-response, also called jugalbandi with respect to instrumentalists. This experimentation creates a constant tension that can take a basic raaga (scale) or taala (time signature) and stretch it out into a 20-minute piece that doesn't feel long at all. That way it showcases both the technical expertise of the artists and also keeps the audience engaged - especially when they know what taalas and raagas are being used. South Asian classical music (in all the different genres and subdivisions) is very cerebral and emotional at the same time. From a very early age, most of us kids who are 2nd generation Indians, Pakistanis, Bengalis, etc. grew up associating classical music with dance and/or instruments (tabla, mridangam, harmonium - the drone that was being played in the front, veena, sarangi, and so many more). The emotional appreciation for music is intrinsically tied into the cerebral aspect - the appreciation of pitch control, the ability to pick out the complexities of a solo percussion piece, or the technical excellence shown by the total mastery over a certain raaga. That's why many Indians, NRIs (nonresident Indians), and desi expats (AKA yours truly) have such highly tuned ears as we show you in the comments. Not all of us can sing like Nusrat, Shankar, or Shreya, but we can all appreciate both exactly how perfect and exacting their performances are as well as how moving they are to the soul - and exactly how much it takes to convey both at the same time.

@Haider Akhlaq I never said it had anything to do with Hinduism. read my post again - I didn't mention Hinduism once. And I explicitly stated that the modern qawwal tradition has its roots in Sufi traditions. There are definitely Hindustani and Carnatic influences in modern qawwali singing, but that in and of itself simply goes to show the depth of the relationships between different styles of classical devotional singing in the South Asian subcontinent.

English Lyrics 👇 "This mild intoxication Is because of your eyes That taught me drinking Your love and your longing Your intoxicating glances Made me a drunkard What wine, what intoxication All this is [due to] your kindness You served me [wine] with your eyes such That I have forgotten myself The whole world is ecstatic, the order of the world is ecstatic The day is ecstatic, so is dawn and so is evening The glass, cup and wine are all ecstatic Because of your intoxicating eyes, everyone and everything is ecstatic Of all the wines you have in your tavern Serve me a little from your eyes I understand your alluring glances That cause intoxication, instead of wine Only your love is my life Neither I know prayers nor ablutions I prostate whenever you come in front of me I am a follower of love since the beginning of life [and] I do not care for piousness or irreligiousness My head has found your house Now I do not search for the mosque My devotion is such devotion That is not bound by the mosque and the temple When I see you once By God, it is no less than a prayer Only your love is my life On the day of judgment, I would rise with the scars of your love Your image would be clinging to my heart on that day Because Only your love is my life Your remembrance is my prayer [and] your wish is my wish This is the miracle of my frenzy That where ever I prostrated A mosque was made there On whom would you inflict pain after me? It is not nice to play with the emotions of sufferers It is not good to laugh at the mourners I lost my heart in [just in] play O my heart is gone! For God's sake change your glances, else My heart is gone I pray to God that you also fall in love with someone And suffer in separation with hands on your heart My heart is gone I lost my heart just in fun And got the measure of falling in love I cry because my heart is lost [but] why do you laugh, what did you get? Okay then….. To whom would you inflict pain after me? How would you take me out of your life? Where would you cast those arrow-like glances? Value my friendship [that] helped you to gain murderous charm Watch me, O my desire of life! I am the same suffering "Anwar" You were not even in your senses at that time [so] don't argue with me in such a manner [but] offer thanks to me That I helped you articulate yourself This mild intoxication Is because of your eyes That taught me drinking ♥

I disagree. Maybe a person will never understand but there can be no restriction that can be placed on enjoyment. I think its highly egotistic of you to assume to place limits on another persons happiness. I can be standing next to an art expert looking at a painting and I can find it every bit as beautiful as him/her without any of his/her knowledge. Music is an art and art moves people emotionally not logically

@@kamallutchman9657 highly egotistic .. seriously? I totally agree music is art .. this type of singing known as qawwal. Qawwal is not just music, it's the lyrics that Nusrat sahab used that made qawwal popular around the world. So my point was that you partially enjoy qawwal just because of the artistic music but you would have enjoyed even more if you could understand the words!

All qwalis are symobls. In this saki "which distributes wine" is reprentive of "spirtual leader" which gives his knowledge While the intoxication "sharabi" is the state he felt when he got guide And "whine" is reprenstative of Islam. In sufism, there is saying that spirtual leader can change hearts with his eyes or there is something in his/her eyes... So in this he is saying that my spirtual leaders eyes gave me intoxication of Islam...

Just one suggestion, when reacting to "sufi" or classical from India or Pakistan, please dont talk when they are singing. If you want to comment on something you spotted find a right spot to "stop" and then speak. (I wouldn't stop the video though). Reason I am saying this is because, these genres are to create trance, a whole aura of divine. When you talk over it, you lose it. Maybe try and absorb it first, feel it and then stop and comment on it. I like the way you break things down. Good job. :)

"Ye jo halka halka suroor hai" This gentle peaceful feeling "Ye teri nazar ka kusoor hai" It's because of your gaze on me "Ke sharaab peena sikha diya" It's made me drink alcohol, or it's made me want to drink to cope with the feeling, or recreate it I guess? Because he's chasing that high (which is a big deal in our culture, because alcohol is strictly forbidden and illegal)

I see a lot of comments here that Carl should just be fawning over Nusrat like crazy. People, everyone is entitled to their opinion and their take. If you want to fawn, please make your own fawning video. I, for one, appreciate Carl's honesty and genuine insight - it is really helping me understand and appreciate music at a deeper level.

OMG Carl thank you so much for recognizing that Jeff Buckley does know this Pakistani artist and his singing Style and also covered his song as well. But also going through Jeff Buckley's documentaries and interviews and listening to all the songs I realize that before listening to this Pakistani artist he sang very much like every other American singers who were taught in a wide range of of styles like Blues, Jazz, Rock and etc, but only when he heard this artist and went to Pakistan did he inherit some of the essence from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan which you can clearly hear in His Grace album. Because if you listen to Jeff's songs before and after hearing Fateh Ali Khan his tone has totally changed. Jeff said it himself that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan style of music saved his life and that the Pakistani artist is his personal Elvis. Unfortunately both great artists died in 1997 only three months apart from each other. R.I.P 😞🙏🏽🙏🏽❤💞💖

One the interesting fact was his popularity in Japan, not only for his music but his resemblance to Laughing Buddha! Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born on October 13, 1948. He was a Pakistani musician and was known for his eccentric style of singing qawwalis which is the devotional music of the Sufis.

Hi Carl, Love to see you exploring so deeply into the Indian Classical music. Ustaad (master) Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan saheb is one of the greatest singers to have practiced the qawwali genre and he hailed from Pakistan. The gentleman sitting next to him in the white jacket was his younger brother and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's father. Qawwals (musicians practising the qawwali form of music) don't just sing for the sake of performances. It's a way of connecting with the almighty and has a high level of spirituality associated. Qawwalis can be easily witnessed across mosques (but not limited to). In Sikhs and Hindus we have Shabad and Kirtan/bhajan genres of music which are again based on the Indian classical music and can be witnessed across Gurudwaras and Temples respectively. On the point about the long duration of performances, these singers (purists) practise music in some way, every waking moment of the day. It's a part of their personality and comes out naturally without any apparent efforts. The gist here is that a performance is not the topmost priority for such purists. They live the art they practise. Public performances, fame and wealth are all incidental.

"Through the bridge, not messing around" haha..Not like that bro. Actually in our subcontinental music we basically train the pharyngeal voice in a conventional manner. When it starts blending with chest, gradually the lower and upper registers gets connected through the bridge and sounds like one single register or one single voice. But the difference is, we use pharynx from the lowest to the highest note of whole range

Well actually.. We Indians don't really consider Pakistan an extrinsic.. because It had been a part of India in past.. The Culture in both the Countries originated thousands of years ago and is respected and followed today also.. It's been only 71 years since Pakistan got seperated from India.. But the spirituality, the art, The Culture will always be respected as souvenir of peace.

One of the most important things to note is that Qawali is a form of storytelling. So, he is not just singing, he is telling a story. This is pure poetry. Also, Carl, you have done a few videos with Rahet Fateh Ali Khan, he was a part of this troop for more than a decade before becoming an independent singer.
