Sona Jobarteh is a multi-instrumentalist and composer from the Gambia. She was born in 1983 into one of the five principal kora-playing griot families from West Africa - she is the first female professional kora player to come from a griot family.

Thanks for reacting to this artist and song. I've been casually following Sona for a few years and appreciate her very much. She is a remarkable person and musician, a credit to her nation, people and tradition. Much West African music is very beautiful and accessible, a pleasure to experience. More specifically, Sona is from the Gambia. If you'd like to react to more of her music, I recommend the music video of her song "Gambia."

Sona Jobarteh sings in the Mandinka language and the instrument she is playing there is the kora which is one of key musical instruments of her tribe. She belongs in a family of Diabaté ( Jobarteh in Gambia) one of the 5 families of the Mandinka Jali's ( griots) . Jali's are musicians, poets , historians etc in the Mandinka society . They play very important role in the community and pass on the history and culture of the society through generations. The most prominent kora players today are Toumani Diabate and son Sidiki (Mali ) Sona Jobarteh ( Gambia and UK) Seckou keita ( Senegal and UK) Jaliba kuyateh ( Gambia) ballake Sisoko ( Mali) Foday Musa Suso ( Gambia and USA), Ablaye Cissoko ( Senegal)

Behind Ken is a classical piano, he listens to various music, from classical to deathcore, tells us how he feels about it. Highlights interesting things and tries to figure out how they do it. I'd love to see you react to The White Buffalo. Probably more specifically the song "The Whistler" that is live at the Guitar Center. It would be a really good song to see the total range of the singer.

The kora instrument is use to keep historic even of the manding empire and pass down through down the family line. Normally they always around the kings as advisers etc..
