OG VIDEO: • Alice In Chains - Love...
ABOUT…
I am Rebecca and I am one heck of a passionate vocal coach/singer/songwriter/impressionist/health/fitness/self- improvement/anything that makes me smile!! I love anything vocal/singing related and geek out on it every day. I want to motivate and inspire others to follow their dreams…corny? Well maybe but it’s true. So what’s motivating me?? I had a huge tumour removed summer 2017 and my ovaries and fallopian tubes. The tumour was the size of a 20 week baby!! However, despite not being able to walk for a couple of weeks, and feeling generally awful…. It has made me create and do what I love! It wasn’t an easy time but I won’t let fear dictate my life. I didn’t think ‘why me’, there are plenty of horrific issues people have to deal with…it’s not always smooth sailing. It’s true when you hear, ‘Life is short’, the crazy thing is, I am glad it happened…I appreciate life even more and practice gratitude everyday…It’s so easy to get caught up with the little things…and I do sometimes, but look at the bigger picture, will it matter in a year or two…?
Also thank you for all your support. It means a lot.
Subscribe to Rebecca Vocal Athlete to get inspired by new videos!
Have a great day!!
Rebecca
Xx

Layne was one of the great singers of that era.. or any era really. So many rock and metal artists over the years were tortured souls and you could tell there was no faking anything they performed. It created a strong connection with their listeners but at the same time a lot of them left this world too soon.

True... been listening to some old stuff by Type O Negative and Peter Steele... he perfectly fitted into that category... honestly... can’t really listen to these Grunge era bands anymore... all great music to slash one’s wrist to but nahh... all those Cobain copies.. Idk not my thing. But it was that time. And they were an essential part of it. that voice though, I‘m no expert... but it’s boring to me. I know so many better singers than that.. To be fair, I still had Peter Steele in my system when I listened to this.. he could only suck in comparison

I went to an Alice In Chains concert in I think 1993. My brothers friend that was with us knew the bass player, Mike Starr who we ran into in the back parking lot of the venue. My brother, his friend & I were bs'ing with Mike when the back doors of this old van come flying open. Out stepped Layne Staley & a huge cloud of hemp smoke. Layne was clearly very high, not just pot high and had clearly had plenty to drink. He was super cool though and said, "What's up guys?" and shook our hands. He then turned to walk to the arena. What stook out so much was how short and suuuupppper skinny he was. He always wore tight pants which I imagine would probably fit my 19 year old daughter. I honestly doubt he was 140 lbs. I would probably guess about 120! One other note, during the concert Layne announced between songs that the band had run out of pot and if anyone could share they would be grateful. Being early 90's pot of course was not legal so a roadie ran around the stage picking up around 20ish bags of pot that had been thrown on stage. He then quickly ran off the stage like a bolt of lightning and through a door marked 'Exit'. lol. I was a junior in high school then. Loved Alice In Chains & loved that concert.

The amazing thing about Layne is that he descends into dark, dark places over a period of time but that he is brave enough to reach out to the listener and take their hand and shows them ,very vividly and in much detail, how dark his world really is. This adds such a tremendous extra dimension to his music and performance. I haven’t seen that much honesty in a performer before him or since.

The vast, vast majority of people could practice all day every day for their entire life and not sound 10% as good as Layne nor have the natural inclination toward storytelling and artistry. My favorite rock vocalist of the 90s. The way he’d do those quiet/apathetic vocals in the verses, building a sense of dread/unease/suspense, then the violent bursts of raw emotion in the chorus... perfect story telling, and really reflected what a tortured soul he was. So sad we lost him to drugs... so few frontmen from that era are still with us.

AiC also had some wonderful vocal harmonization between the singer, Layne, and the guitarist, Jerry. Of course, Jerry Cantrell's riffs were amazing, too. If Rebecca enjoys Bass guitar riffs, she also couldn't go wrong here. I think the song "Would" highlists most of these. From what I understand, the bassist was also a tortured soul who passed early and was on some star reality series shortly before.

One of the things I love about this song is how sparse the rhythm section is in the verses. The bass plays such staccato notes, while the drums has the absolute minimum of a beat structure with some short fills here and there. There's so much open space, and it helps create so much tension. The guitar is helping with creepy arpeggios. And it's just SO. SLOW. The whole time you're waiting for it to get going, and it just. won't. do. it. Then the chorus hits and all that tension is finally released. It's great songwriting.

One of the great things about Alice In Chains, was the awesome harmonies between Layne and Jerry. I would love to see what you think about some of their other songs like “would” or “down in a hole”. Their mtv unplugged session was pretty cool as well...

@@chigwesibanyama1148 yeah he was, and he also had little to no teeth at the time as well. Was the bands first performance back together after a good few years. And they almost bailed on MTV

As a fan of Alice In Chains there is still a sense of lost and Anger even after all these years later. Feel like He had so much left to offer.

One of the most creative thing about those riffs is how they evolve into roars then taper in to soft tones like the title "Love"= soft "Hate"=Roar "Love"=ends softly. The whole song is like that, it's great Should eventually get to the stuff they did during the MTV unplugged. He was closer to the end and very sick but still gave a hell of a show Edit: Layne died in 02 just like the other Seattle legends...I mean not in the same way or time, they all died at different times, just that they're all gone, except Vedder who is thankfully still with us and sounding awesome

Layne had a distinctive resonating tone in his voice that was matched only by his emotive delivery and masterful ability to sing on pitch. I often wonder what he could've achieved had he not fell under the grip of addiction.
