Chicago is an American rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1967. The group began calling itself the Chicago Transit Authority (after the city's mass transit agency) in 1968, then shortened the name in 1969. Self-described as a "rock and roll band with horns", Chicago was much influenced by jazz in its early years
"If You Leave Me Now" is a song by the American rock group Chicago, from their album Chicago X. It was written and sung by bass player Peter Cetera and released as a single on July 30, 1976. It is also the title of a Chicago compilation album released by Columbia Records (Columbia 38590) in 1983

He said that right after he broke his jaw he had to go out on tour and sing with his jaw still wired. But he did it, and he liked the way his voice sounded so he continues to this day to sing that way. I just watched an interview with him from the 1990s where he talked about that. He was beaten by 4 marines just because he had long hair. His jaw was broken in 3 places and he spent several days in intensive care.

After Terry's passing, Chicago degraded to AM rock. AM rock was the enemy! I had to let them go.

@@stevetanner3019 My push is to see Terry Kath given the recognition he’s due. He was one of the great guitar players of his era. His vocals are great. You assumed I didn’t like the newer stuff. You shouldn’t do that. I have nearly every Chicago album from CTA to the early 90s. I’ve seen them in concert multiple times.

Trifecta of 60's-70's brass bands: Chicago...Blood, Sweet and Tears...Earth, Wind and Fire. Can't go wrong listening to any of them...all outstanding in concert. 'Make me Smile'....😊😊😊

Peter Cetera - an under-rated vocalist, bassist and lyricist. early Chicago - '69-'78 - the best years with the original members. Still good, with "love ballads" until Cetera left. And Yes- Ms Beth- Chicago was the first rock group that was invited to perform a concert at The Met. (Chicago IV - a 4 LP live album). They were recognized for their song writing talents- they wrote their own musical arrangements - horns and all!

So why is he underrated? How come great vocalist that are not at the very top in the music world most always are said to be underrated. Chicago is a world famous band and Peter Certera is certainly and has never been underrated.

Same here! I was young then - a student - in the magical town of Salzburg, Austria. One evening I danced with a beautfiul woman to that song - romantically in love with her. Holding her in my arms was bliss. Sadly, I never saw her again - even though I tried. That song always brings me back to that special, magical moment when your spirit soars.

One thing that gets overshadowed by ballads such as this is how gritty, and how _political,_ Chicago were in their first years. Pieces such as the suite "It Better End Soon" on _Chicago Transit Authority_ and "A Song for Richard and His Friends" on _Chicago at Carnegie Hall_ make it clear they were ready to start the revolution. And that's not even to mention how hard they _did_ rock in their early years. Most of their first three albums continue to stand up fifty years later, with Terry Kath's searing guitar leads and Jimmy Pankow and Bobby Lamm's horn charts.

In 1969, Peter Cetera suffered a broken jaw during a brawl with a street gang, which explains why he sings with a clenched jaw as a habit.

Peter Cetera blows my mind. It’s so sad to see that he’s basically gone into retirement. I guess old age and that high tenor voice has finally caught up to him. Such a unique powerful voice. This genre and style has become a lost art. Still waiting to hear a review of Andy Bell from Erasure and Danny Elfman from Oingo Boingo. 🤙🏻 Thanks for reviewing!

The exact sound, musically and vocally, of Chicago has been reproduced by a group of master musicians/singers that go by the name 'Leonid & Friends'. They have toured the U.S. numerous times and can be found on You Tube where they do all the old, great Chicago songs. They are, for the most part, from Russia, with some members from Ukraine.

Actually, it didnt happen when he was a kid. He was a member of Chicago when it happened. He was a Chicago Cubs Baseball fan, at Los Angeles watching the Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers play. He had the long hair, and he got into it with a bunch of Marines(short hair). Thats when he had his jaw broken.

It’s so fascinating to me that in interviews some of the members of Chicago have these gruff voices and personalities he even got his jaw broken but played these gentle love ballads in the 70’s. I get what Bill Hader and Fred Armisen were going for with their Mockumentry episode of Documentary Now about the 70’s soft rock band about Chicago.

Before the British Invasion, There was an Irish Invasion...Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem played Carnegie Hall in 1963, they played the year before too. Let's see....quite a few songs about whiskey, war, one about being a gigolo, couple about being a lady's man....ummm yeah...might not have been rock but the rafters shook. You show me one rock guitarist who can strum an acoustic guitar like Liam. Back to Chicago...if you were to talk to people who followed them from the start...they hate this period. I like it. Peter really cuts through the mix. He sings with a lot of strain but good things come to those who try.

One quick note about the band. The band never had or has a LEAD SINGER. Usually there were 3 that alternated depending on who wrote the song and who they and the band selected. This song however was written ang produced by David Foster. He wanted Peter Cetera to become the bands front-man and reform the group around him. Members said no, so he took Cetera and helped him go solo. Chicago Found replacments for him and others over the years. They still excist with 4 original members, though I've heard 2 are retiring due to health reasons.

I've tried to sing with Peter but he's two octaves higher than me. I'm not a natural tenor. At karaoke the DJ adjusts the accompanying track down for me. That frees me up to improvise a bit.

If you already know the names of cities, I recommend you 'Myslovitz - For You (Music Video, 1080p Digital Restoration)' The name of the band comes from the name of the city, close to where I was born - Poland, Uberslessien, one of the best rock bands in the history of Polish music (young music). Listen to Beth and decide for yourself if it's worth doing something about it. Thx!

Baritone singer Terry Kath, Chicago's founding guitar player, was the best singer they had. He could belt out powerful rock and roll, and sing tender ballads. "Introduction" on their debut album as The Chicago Transit Authority will give you his rock prowess. Byblos on Chicago VII will give you his tender ballad sound along with his acoustic and electric guitar mastery.

It appears that he leans his head back to get his mouth open more than depending on his jaw dropping down. I'm not positive it gives him much more in the way of openness, but that's what it appears he is doing - leaning back and to the side slightly.... just a guess...

For another location named group, try Saturday Night by the Bay City Rollers. They weren't from Bay City, they threw a dart at a map and liked how the name sounded. They're not a Boston or Chicago, but they did have a teenie-bopper appeal in their day.

Fantastic voice. Fantastic "big band", with full instrumentation, to broaden the minds of both the prior generation and also the new (new, then) generation, as to what was possible. The guys who broke his jaw motivated by bigotry and entitlement were early Trump supporters before they had Trump as a cult leader to tell them it was "good" to act that way. Trump was a need they had, but didn't yet know it. Now, that kind of Neanderthal is drooling all over their Dear Leader and out for blood, "standing back and standing by" for him to be in power again, this time as a dictator, in a few months. (Posted May 12, 2024, ahead of the dictatorship that is *surely* coming in 2025)

be careful about doing location based musical groups. The Butthole Surfers are out there and technically their name contains a location. (hint: its not the ocean.)
