John R. Cash was an American country singer-songwriter. Most of Cash's music contained themes of sorrow, moral tribulation, and redemption, especially in the later stages of his career. He was known for his deep, calm bass-baritone voice, the distinctive sound of his Tennessee Three backing band characterized by train-like chugging guitar rhythms, a rebelliousness coupled with an increasingly somber and humble demeanor, free prison concerts, and a trademark all-black stage wardrobe, which earned him the nickname the "Man in Black".
"(Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend" is a cowboy-styled country/western song written in 1948 by American songwriter, film and television actor Stan Jones. A number of versions were crossover hits on the pop charts in 1949, the most successful being by Vaughn Monroe. The ASCAP database lists the song as "Riders in the Sky" (title code 480028324[2]), but the title has been written as "Ghost Riders", "Ghost Riders in the Sky", and "A Cowboy Legend".
Songwriters: Stan Jones
Genre: Country
Performed by Johnny Cash
Date
1987

The high-pitched, falsetto sounds Johnny was making weren't to imitate an eagle, but rather the iconic noises cowboys made driving a herd, enunciated in the lyrics' "Yippee-eye-oh." Cowboys would often shout these sounds at the cattle, a running series of 'yips' and 'yees', as part of pushing them along. Some think this practice originated as a way to imitate predators like wolves or coyotes.

The story I heard from one of Johnny's sisters is that as a teen he took one singing lesson. It lasted about 20 minutes before the the teacher gave up, saying that there was nothing they could teach him.

Johnny covered a lot of songs through his career. This one was perfect for him, in terms of telling a story, rhythm, and tone. The Outlaws did a great cover as well, but Johnny nails it.

His rendition of this song remains my favorite Johnny Cash tune. Always had a thing for spooky tales and ghost stories. So to hear Johnny tell of spectral cowboys riding across the horizon is a recipe for a great song to me.

One of the first songs I learned by heart as a kid. Johnny was such a great story telling singer. My parents had so many of his albums that it was easy to learn his songs since we listened to him so much. "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" is another song I learned early.

The fulll story of the Legend of the Ghost Riders is extremely interesting. Goes back to an area of the Texas Panhandle where the original stampede on which the legend is based occurred. BTW J.R.'s version of "Out AMong the Stars" is another "story" song that's really worth a listen

Interesting when a person from across the pond mentions an accent..I just never hear it with a lot of country singers, especially Cash. I've been in Texas my whole life but only a few accents really perk my ears up, like Dolly, Loretta..Reba. If you can find it, there's this AMAZING video clip that's in black and white from 1950 or so that has a classroom full of American women from all over the U.S. saying words out loud and comparing their accents. It's VERY cool. With TV and travel we're losing accents and they all had some really great ones.

Johnny's producer/engineer used to call him Capt. Decibel because with so little effort, his voice projected from his chest. No matter what drums or bass or guitars they laid down, his voice always made it through the mix and onto the tape.

There are so many great versions of "Ghost Riders in the Sky"...Vaughan Monroe, the Outlaws, Duane Eddy, etc. Like many of the folk and western tunes, its origins can be traced back to some degree to Britain. On another topic, the "eagle sound" is probably someone doing the Bob Wills signature "A-ha" that accompanied many of his Western Swing tunes...

Johnny was born just down the road several miles. I grew up on his music, and I am a fan. However, I never saw anything he did for the state. I asked my dad about this, and he said he figured Johnny was so glad to see a way out of the cotton patches that he never looked back. A local man in Kingsland shot the water tank and it began to leak. It looked like Johnny was urinating on the town. Funny story.

Would love to see you do a video of Burl Ives singing this song and contrast it with this Johnny Cash version. So different but both are uniquely wonderful story songs. BTW, that high yeehow sound he makes here is not like an animal sound - it is a common vocalization a mounted cowboy makes as he rides the heard - waving his rope or his hat...yipping at the cattle with his voice.

The reverence for these haunting cowboy songs is something uniquely American....what can come off as a bit dated and maybe cringe inducing to some fill a lot of us with a humbled honor kind of thrill. The knowledge that there were cowboys actually out roaming the plains, tending their herds, sleeping under the stars...sitting around a fire and picking out tunes on a guitar. A bit simplistic, sure, but a lovely thought, nonetheless...
