Steve has mentioned that his extension and vocalization of vowels comes from the fact that he was born and raised by Portuguese parents from the Azores Islands and he himself is fluent and has recorded in Portuguese.

I love that you said Steve is a vocal athlete! Great first reaction video. You are wrong about the back up vocals, though. I'm pretty sure all members are trained singers. I've watched a bunch of docuseries and saw them warming up, and the background vocals are definitely live and smooth as silk. I agree this version is better than the recorded one. 😁

I have a friend John Dagostino, 61 years old, sings in a Journey/Styx Tribute band called Chain Reaction whose voice is so close to Steve Perry's it's uncanny. These are singers who are endowed with high Tenor voices. That's where their voice wants to reside. Gifted, then developed voices. The envy of many Tenors..lol!!

The first time I discovered Steve Perry was on the We Are The World music video. This was back when Napster was all the rage. When he came on screen, I remember thinking, "Woah, who was that??". Just a few seconds is all it took to impress the crap out of me. I had to search to find his name and immediately downloaded all the songs I could find. Been a huge admirer ever since. Great reaction video! Have you heard of Dimash Kudaibergen? If not, I highly recommend you do a blind video reaction to him singing a French song called S.O.S. followed by a song called Sinful Passion. He's a singer from Kazakhstan and is considered to have the best voice in the world. If you haven't heard him before, you will definitely get sucked into a rabbit hole. Godspeed. Your commentary and analysis is very pointed and detailed (and very appreciated) but, please, don't belt into the mic. A diaphragmatically supported vocalization at that range in the upper registers is quite hard on the ears and you obviously have a powerful voice. Maybe point away from the mic when you're giving a vocal example?

Not true. The backing vocals are from the band. Don't forget they started in the70s / came up in an era of music that was highly competitive. There were no tricks. You had to be multitalented to make it to the top. You had to be able to sing / play live, at a minimum. It is one of many reasons why. Much of today's music is momentary / will never be, or have. That timeless quality. Musicians were better. Off the top of my head. Journey, Kansas, Yes, Queen, The Eagles, & The Doobie Bros. Have members executing multi part harmonies. While providing instrumentation. There are more. Those are just the ones that jump out at me.
@smw

You are right in many ways here, but in this particular case with this concert, they had pre recorded backing vocals since they knew it was going to be filmed. There are interviews with Steve that back this up.

I'm disappointed that Don't Stop gets so much reaction. Any live version of Winds of March from 78 thru 80 deserves attention. Perry is a vocal freak who got away with so much throat or head voice singing. Also you so often hear him breathe which suggests room for improvement even for him. Who's Crying Now from same concert is good example. Regardless, pure lyric tenor.
@jenniferchough
@jenniferchough 4 жыл бұрын
I think I heard him take a breath maaaaaybe once or twice in t"Who's Crying Now" so I don't know what you mean. I rarely hear him breathe live (only in studio recordings, which is more for effect). You can't even SEE him breathe often which is more a sign of tension. You don't see him suck air in, chest rise up, or scrunching up his shoulders much. He has a masterful control over his breath at this point in his career that you don't even see him take in a lung-full when he has a big sustained note on deck. The only "tension" I could see is when he's in his upper registers and he kinda bends his head to the right against his shoulder but that seems more of a habit or his own technique than tension.
@dannymartinez9371
@dannymartinez9371 4 жыл бұрын
@@jenniferchough Better example: his version of Silver Bells. You can hear him inhale practically before every phrase or line instead of dropping his diaphragm. He sounds great otherwise if you can tune out that constant wisp of air.
