I think, this is the main reason they won. They were the only act in the genre, so they united votes from everywhere and even got votes from people who would not have voted for another genre. Perfect Storm of Engagement.

It was such a fresh breath of air at a time when Eurovision had become quite stale. Also of course every metal fan in Europe came out of the woodworks to vote them to victory. I was 10yr when Lordi won. In Finland many of us little girls had always been fans of some heavier music (Nightwish for example), but Lordi took us all by surprise. Everyone was talking about it in every age range and for many of us smaller kids who weren't born when Finland won hockey the first time, it was the first taste of national pride. As here we rarely show much pride for anything and we are much faster to find the issues in everyday life. It was great.

Mr Lordi apparently had a throat infection just as the event kicked off. He did some work with his vocal coach & got through the semi final & final. When they do the big finale the often missed backing vocalist in the monks outfit reveals himself in full Kiss makeup which is fitting given the whole band at this point loved Kiss.

They released a book called ''Lordiary'' here in Finland sometime ago where Mr. Lordi told that this and his semifinal performances are his worst in the history of Lordi just because he was so sick during them and his voice was really down and whatnot. He also pointed out how it's a shame that it's Lordi's most watched live performance and also by far his worst.

I love Lordi, I've had the pleasure of seeing them at a festival when I was writing for a local newspaper. They blew up the entire front of the stage just to start off the show. Pyro in literally everything, from the costumes to the instruments and even the drumsticks. One of the maddest and best stage shows I've ever seen. Also, loads of fun! Although I gotta say, when I saw them, Mr Lordi hit the notes on this song a bit better even - but it was a few years later, so he propably got a bit of practice in :D

Leena has an amazing voice & does a superb job on backing vocals. Something quite unique to Eurovision as the rules state no live instruments, but all vocals must be live. At that point & even today when on tour Lordi would prerecorded backing vocals. Her vocal talents were criminally underused live. If they didn’t re-record the backing track then the bass will be by Karma & not Ox as Karma was the bass player on the 2006 Arockalypse album despite Ox being on the album cover. And with Amen leaving the band earlier in the year, that only leaves Mr. Lordi from this lineup. Leena (Awa) still performs with Sampsa (Kita) & Niko (Kalma) on occasion when not touring with her current band. With Sampsa she gets to sing live which is awesome.

I just saw Lordi live last week, they still got it! Altho, from the eurovision lineup, only Mr. Lordi is left, but ofc everyone that came along after this are also fantastic. Their concerts are so much fun, I mean at least here in Finland where they get kinda silly. I don't think Mr. Lordi's speaks have as much personality in English like it has in Finnish, because, you see, he has a northern Finnish dialect/accent. He's a true stand-up comedian. Current lineup: Mr. Lordi, vocals Kone, guitar Hiisi, bass Mana, drums Hella, keyboards

I was so bummed out when when Ox left but I'd kind of had a feeling he was starting to want to go elsewhere. But when Amen left, that shit threw me off kilter super hard for like three four months (if my sense of time is correct). I'm still not quite over that but at least the two went in quick succession so it kind of makes it easier. I'm already largely used to Hiisi so I'm hoping that that will also soften the blow a bit, help me get used to Kone. It's still such a weird damn feeling suddenly remembering that Amen isn't there anymore, I've never had that before regarding a band's lineup change.

I was too young to really be interested in these kinds of shows when this happened but later I found Lordi because my mother, fully supporting of my monster obsession, bought a Lordi T-shirt from a thrift store because she thought I'd like it. And she was right. I'm pretty sure the shirt was there because this was around the time this specific lineup had recently changed (I think it was Awa, the keyboardist, that had left around that time). And they've been one of my top 5 favourite bands ever since. The entire fun of this band is that they don't take themselves too seriously. Most of their songs are really goofily over the top, at least lyrics wise, and it's absolutely awesome. And then thanks to that some of the more serious songs hit that much harder on an emotional level I think (Children of the Night and It Snows In Hell are two of those that have always stuck out to me). Unfortunately I've only seen them live once at the Tuska metal festival (my mother took me as a birthday gift, it was great even though I didn't get to stay for even a full day). The pyro was quite tasteful, considerable but nothing over the top. Fun and fitting. I haven't watched any show recordings in a couple years so I don't know how well Mr.Lordi sings in concert nowadays but back when I was able to hear it there it very good. He has that quality to his voice thay even if he doesn't quite hit a note, it kind of feels like part of the character and it makes the experience that much more interesting in my opinion. Glad to see this band get some love, they deserve it.

I remember that. It was epic. I liked the music, but this was so against the whole establishment of the traditional ESC ... and then they actually won!!! That showed that Europe was ready for something different :-)

You should definitely react to newer Lordi stuff. Lordi is much more than this only song and performance, This is the most known song, but the worst performance of it, like Mr. Lordi has said. Could you react to example: "Lordi - Devil is a Loser Live at Z7 2019" or "Lordi - Borderline official music video 2021" or maybe disco song "Lordi - Believe Me official music video 2021" 😊

I know I'm a few months late but do want to share a few fun details about Lordi. 1) I read in a comment somewhere on KZfaq(2nd hand source) that Mr Lordi was really sick the week of eurovision. He says this is the worst performance he has ever done, and it is the clip with Lordi that has the most views. He feels a bit mad about it. Story 2. I watched Lordi live in september 06 in sweden. Lordi as main band. Opening act. Sabaton. Now, this year. Sabaton had a big tour and in their european tour the opening act was.... Lordi. It just feels so... Poetic. The circle is now compete.

Finland is this alternate universe where Metal is their "pop music" land where metal bands get played on radio stations. I love that Findland just embraced it that year for Eurovision and just went for a full out fun yet heavy metal song. It must be weird for Finish bands to tour the U.S going to small venues when they sell out stadiums back home.

I remember watching this. Even the other contestants were rooting for 'the monsters' to win! Apparently it takes the lead singer something like 3 hours to get makeup an costume on. That's dedication to your craft!

The Grim Reaper in the background, which you barely see, is making the high pitch parts. Nevertheless, at least the most memorable performance in Eurovision ever.

You should see (not necessarily react to) the live in Helsinki version, when they had a big celebration concert in the streets near the waterfront. 1,000,000 people turned up, which is amazing on its own, but even moreso when you consider the population of Helsinki and surrounds!

I would love to see a show that's just Gwar and bands like this. Years ago there was even a nerd band called Power Glove that played all video game music, and the lead singer had shoulder pads like Bowser...they sucked but I loved the performance.....Time for some F#*%ing TETRIS!!!! lol Oh yeh, and Winny Puhh....nobody can top that act!!!

I remember that at the time before actual contest, fans of metal and rhard ock music all around Europe where taking in phbb forums and making Lordi to win. It was planned that fans in all countries would shamesly vote for Lordi to win in big numbers. At least that time voting your pick of the song could be done by like phone call, can't remember could it be done by text. But anyway it was like "For the first time we have serious metal/hard rock competor and we will stick it to the those posh pop singers " etc mentality. I remember those talks and it was glorious to witness that fans of this kind of music stick together and did give the big effing middle finger to the opressors! And also after it metal became more of main stream all around Europe... Well, at least in Finland, as it was first time ever we won Eurovision and it was done Monster rock/metal band!!! Metal music did officially come from underground to salongs etc and now we have like metal singers singing Yule songs in churches and other crazy shit!

Funny thing is that all the old people almost rose to barricades saying "We can'tsend this kinda band in Eurovision". After they won even they were singing it. 8t was Finland's first and only win so far. And after that we've seen metal bands in this competition from Iceland, even Germany if I remember correct.

Lordi is still great and make good stuff, though Eurovision win really hit em hard with bad contracts, which in the end resulted that only Mr. Lordi is left in the band from Eurovision lineup and also he had really bad burn-down from workload and financial struggles.

Mr. Lordi likely doesn't subscribe to christianity other than drawing themes from it, and the man behind the monster, Tomi Putansuu, after a quick googling, is more likely a cultural christian ("belongs" to the church in name only, and doesn't really practice religion), because that's just how things roll for people of his age in Finland. I say this, because I found no evidence of him actually being a religious person. If anyone can find mentions to the opposite from credible sources, don't hesitate to educate.
