Louis Armstrong sings with a smile, literally and figuratively. Juxtaposed against the grittiness of his sound, it creates such a feeling of sincerity. He sounds like he's been through it all, but still chooses to sing with such brightness and joy that it absolutely pulls at your heartstrings, especially in this song. I'd love to see you react to Sarah Vaughan. Really anything of hers, but I particularly like "Here's That Rainy Day".

I was blessed to see Louis Armstrong as a child before he passed away my family and myself were at a jazz festival in Chicago and Mr Armstrong was there performing I did not realize it was going to be one of his last performances since he was pretty sick he died later that year

I've never noticed before how he keeps singing like a half measure past each word. He just keeps pushing even tho his chords are shot. His grumble adds to the flavor of the song. He's like some aged lion past his prime but still strong... a true king.

Another person who often intentionally befuddled her accompaniment was Carol Channing. Everyone knew the words, and the notes she was supposed to sing to her Broadway hits, and exactly when they were supposed to show up, but Carol said she liked to keep the audience guessing about the 'when' so they had something to listen for, and pay attention to. Nobody ever rushed Channing into singing anything at another tempo other than her own good time!

Love Louis, love this song. This is among the many sounds of childhood, as my dad loved jazz (my mum loves jazz too, but it was my dad that introduced her to it). It always takes me right back. Also, I love jazz, especially trumpet, and Louis was pretty great on that instrument too.

His voice is iconic and this song brings me so much joy. I like how you can't help but just smile enjoying it. I also haven't had your videos fed to my feed in about a year so it's nice to see you again! I was wondering, are most songs decided in your patreon? I haven't seen a new home free reaction since I was on and would love to hear your technical breakdown on more of their covers like Folsom Prison blues, End of the road, American Pie, Mayday by Cam, or their Sea shanty Medley.

I don't think I could enjoy this song listening to it on the radio as much I do watching him sing. For me, when I watch him sing, I feel he's telling me a story, and I believe what he's telling me. In this video his personality just shines through, that's why he captures so many hearts.

Always a joy to hear the great Satchmo! One of my Dad's favourite singers, and I'm lucky enough to have inherited some of his LPs. I heard a radio special on Louis Armstrong some time ago where they compared his sweet crystal tone on the trumpet with his gravelly singing voice, and how in both cases he was always pitch perfect.thanks so much for this.

Beth, thank you for that thoughtful analysis of Louis' voice, timing, phrasing, sibilant S's, the vibrato, etc. But in the back of it all is such a warm-hearted man who loves people and life so much that it just shows with every note! Louis was an American original..."Ohhhh Yessss!!!"

There was a really good PBS radio documentary on him back I guess in the late 90s. One of the funny stories from that is that he was going to go to Europe on a tour. He had a tape recorder and he often taped his phone conversations apparently. So they had these to listen to. He was calling a guy and telling him that he needed some sheet music. And before the European tour he was telling him, no, I need a LOT of sheet music. They finally realized that 'sheet music' was their code word for pot.

Jazz critics have said this about Louie: " You could have the worst day of your life, but go home and listen to his records, and suddenly your bad day goes away--It's like he's patting ya on the back and saying, "Don't worry, son--it'll be all right" He was so loved by everyone-Conservatives,liberals, hippies, and presidents--His joy when he performed was so infectuous.
