I love Marcelito and admire his determination. He is, after all, not formally trained. He kind of just taught himself while working in the streets. That explains his inconsistency. He doesn't have perfect technique but considering his background, he is an awesome and humble person, with natural talent.

This is a singing style called "doble kara" meaning double face. Obviously, singing different parts. I find he's more comfortable in the female sound. It's more rounded and whole. He's great. He doesn't speak much English...although a bit better now. Marcelito isn't classically trained at all but the way he can switch between registers/voices is what makes it so good.

Marcelito’s Wish Bus performance of The Prayer may be much older, but it’s much better than this one on AGT. His female voice on the Wish bus one sounded female, as opposed to sounding like a male trying to sound female. Either way, I still love him for his talent and humility. No, Marcelito is not exactly a Filipino Zhou Shen, even though they both have the same kindness and humility. But, unlike Shenshen, Marcelito never studied in a music school. He was homeless for many years before being noticed for his range and finding a producer who didn't employ him properly... until AGT. Note that some of his performances in the Wish Bus were also very astonishing.

What's interesting is that Marcelito never had any vocal training at all. He is an abandoned kid. His dad went to prison and his mom left at the age of 7. He basically survived on the streets all by himself until some kindhearted people took him in. He also barely speaks English so obviously he also does not speak a word of Italian. He learned songs just by listening. For me that's an even more impressive skill. He learned to sing and do different voices to comfort himself when he was afraid during those times he was alone. I'm more a fan of his life story than his vocal abilities.

I think if you heard Pomoy on the Wish bus first without looking, you might have believed that that there was a real female and a separate male singer. Many of those who reacted to the Wish bus version thought that Marcelito really sounded like Celine Dion. I guess the Judges were just too surprised that they didn't notice that it sounded a bit meh at first.

The "gimmick" as you called it is Doble Kara (dual voice) a technique admired in the Philippines. Perhaps you shouldn't be so dismissive of other cultures or voices?

I have heard this singer before. To me, it is just amazing as he had trained/practise hard to sing like this. Some other songs he sang also quite nice. But, I would not have the desire to listen again. Just my opinion.
