This song actually came about coz olivia wrote a poem in a college poetry class and then turned it into a song. The lyrics are really beautiful 😍

My favorite part of this song is when she says “I’m losing it lately” and “aren’t you the greatest thing to ever exist” and it’s so nasal and closed and sounds almost like a sneer, it just gives me shivers. This is my fav song on the album for sure

Billboard named "lacy" the worst track on GUTS but I might say that this track made me feel sure that GUTS is a good album, imaging having GUTS without this folky song like ??? all the same. Cried with lacy oh lacy 😭😭

I don’t think Olivia intentionally tries to do the “indie girl” voice, it is just how she speaks. You can hear her pronounce s sounds like a sh in interviews

In a recent People magazine interview, Olivia confirmed that Chappell Roan sang background vocals for this song (and a few others on GUTS). Together, they create a vocal harmony that becomes transcendent, especially the line, "and ooh, I try, I try, I try." This beautiful effect continues to built throughout the song.

When I first heard the album Lacy made me fall asleep lol. It’s so beautiful I felt at peace & just fell asleep so the next day I had to listen to the rest of the album lol. Grudge is my favorite by far. I relate a little too hard & each time I hear it I cry like I’m still going through it. The lyrics in that song. My goodness. I’m just getting ran over by a truck

This song is so underrated, easily my favorite Olivia song…you could almost say a throwback to 60’s Folk. But also, the context…it reminds me of being a teenager and watching a super “hot Girl” who would have her supposed best friend who was well, not so hot. It just seemed like the hot girl really didn’t care that much about her less hot friend, and was there just to make her look that much better, like counterpoint. This song uncovers how the “less hot” girl starts to understand her role in this friendship, and starts to resent her “hot” friend. I just remember seeing this over and over

What I love about this song apart from its brilliant and unique blends of vocal techniques and music production........ its the delicate way of writing jealousy that doesn't make the bearer of that emotion look like a heinous, rabid, spiteful monster who can barely acknowledge the virtues of the one who's standing where the monster wishes they were... like doing so is accepting fault. Olivia explores and expresses jealousy as a theme so often in her music that one could call her a pro on that emotion. She has leaned into being the monster. She has attempted to redirect the anger to the people who were actually at fault. She tried to take her fair share of responsibility. She tried to wish them well while cherishing the memories....... but, here, she figured out how to fully embrace the messy emotion and the unhealthy behavior while taking ownership of it and not feeling compelled to rip anyone apart in order feel better. She's just connecting with the people who have ever shared in those low moments without feeding the monster.. without teaching anything.. without judgment. Just connecting to the sensation. And it's absolutely gorgeous.

I watched her Tiny Desk concert and she explained that she wrote "Lacy" as an assignment for a poetry class she had taken. She said it was a very different process to her other songs, to start with the lyrics fully written and then creating the melody/music to fit.

Fun fact about this song! Liv mentions in her performance of this at Tiny Desk Concert that this song was actually a poem first! She wrote a poem for an English class at college, and she doesn’t normally turn poems into songs so this was a first!
