Every band wants a song like this. A cut that isn't played on the radio, but every fan knows the words and can sing it from the very first chorus. It's a sad love song, but it captures the feeling of love so well. We don't cry because it's over, we sing because it happened.

I think the key was that Freddie & Brian trusted their audience. They knew that they could let the pauses & silence, the simplicity & grace simply be what it is because the audience would go there with them. The greatest Queen love story is between the band & the fans. This song shows that love in all its glory.

If Freddy had opted for a career in opera, he would have been one of the greatest (and skinniest) tenors of all time! IMHO, his range and emoting, and his vibratos, portamentos and glissandi were second to none. What a sad and tragic loss his death was to music. *_R_* 😎

@@JoseMVelazquez Remember _'The Three Tenors'... Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo & José Carreras? What about Andrea Bocelli? I know there are not many, but everyone knows these and would have known Freddie too. All that said... he and Queen were a force of Nature. *_R_* 😎

@@robingarvin-mack Of course I know them, and a few others. But that's cause I like opera too, but not everyone does. I would say there are far more people that don't know any of them than people who don't know Freddie. I think Pavarotti is probably the most famous out of those and he is not as famous as Freddie, or other rock/pop or even rap artists. Opera is like a niche genre, sure it has millions of fans, but relative to others genres it is a niche genre. And that is unfortunate.

@@JoseMVelazquez Yes Yes Yes, of course, my friend. My point was that the four tenors I mentioned (and quite a few 'crossover' sopranos who I did not cite) were well known and enjoyed by millions... including those who do not normally enjoy opera like we do. But in any event, it is all moot. Forgive me, but I do not know how old you are, but have you enjoyed Freddy & Montserrat Caballe's (1987) duet, _'Barcelona'?_ If you have not, you can easily find it on YT. *_R_* 😎

Great analysis. Have you seen Queen doing Impromptus? Such as at Wembley 1986, Freddie's falsetto was always good. Depending on your voice type, male voices can often become heavier as they age. Heavier voices are far more rare then lyrical voices, especially in tenors. In fact, there are almost no dramatic voices left in opera at the moment, these are amazing voices, but they can take time to develop. Look at Franco Corelli as an example, he had an amazing heavy voice, but he started off with a lyrical voice. Freddie's voice changed naturally into a heavier voice. Of course Queen was one of the bands that toured the most, and Freddie's own partying was not always good for his voice, along with some techniques. However, his voice grew consistently heavier over time, it was an organic change, and cannot be attributed to nodules. People are simply very used to light and lyrical voices, but heavier and dramatic voices are really amazing and powerful. Going back to opera singers such as Mario Del Monaco and Franco Corelli, they had amazing heavy, manly and powerful tenor voices, that you just cannot find today. Everyone is just being taught to sing with light voices. Singing lighter is not necessarily better.

Your passion for Freddie enthrals me. You have to take into account that this day he had a throat infection and his doctor advised him to rest his voice, but he still came on and performed. He went on to perform a duet with montserrat caballe with 'Barcelona, he loved music and was always looking for more ways to entertain us, He was the best entertainer that ever lived.. Some interesting differences between this version and the album version. First of all, this is in a lower key. Second, like you mentioned he uses mixed voice instead of falsetto. Lastly, when he sings "because you don't know" he changes the melody slightly. In the original, it's broken into two notes "kno-ow." The second note is a step above the first. But I guess he decided he couldn't hit that cleanly, even in the lower key. So he sings it as one note here. He sings higher notes than that elsewhere, but those are in rock songs where he can belt a bit more.

Hi Beth, I LOVE your Freddie reactions... I always learn something! I ran across an interview that Freddie had done in 1979, I believe. (So at least 7 years before this performance) He referred to the nodules in his throat as far back as that, saying that he had blown his voice out at some point during their concert tour and they had to cancel some shows until he got his voice back. (I think this was during the Live Killers tour, which was '78-79, but not certain.)

Might I reccomend another touching and powerful Brian May penned tune? I've been a fan of Queen since the early seventies. I've seen them twice at Madison Square Garden back in 1980 and 1982. The track is "Save Me" off of the Game album, in fact the last song on side 2. There is a great clip from Queen Rock Montreal 1981, the same tour I saw them on in 1980. The track speaks for itself.

Yes Freddie had a very fast vibrato and was unstable. He also sang alot from his chest rather than his diaphragm. Freddie was also diagnosed with having nodules way back in 1975 and refused to have them removed for fear of ruining his voice completely

Loved this! For AMAZING dynamics watch Freddie sing "Save Me" live in Montreal 1981 or "Play the Game" same concert.

I truly believe that Queen WANTED to play music that people WANTED to hear. They cared about their audience, and many of their songs were MEANT, DESTINED to be better live than recorded, even though their recordings were impeccable. It is what separates them from every other band.

Thanks for a great reaction. Freddie was so gifted and talented. Check out a tribute of this song by Marc Martel from Canada. It's beautiful as well. Kind of looks like Freddie too! Take care😬

When some people say about other singers or band We love him eeeeee boys and girls, you really dont know what love mean for you it is just.WORD You say I love him,her I love them but it is just words nothing more words the same as bread,or milk but when We say we love our Freddie it is feel,it is intimacy,it is purrest sense of love ♥you feel this warm heat extending around the heart you feel butterfly into your stomach, you feel that drug called love what you never want to get out of your vein so that is LOVE♥ Not just word but feeling deep into you and why we have such love to Our Freddie,it is nort just about his exterior,or music is something deep ,with we are engaged learn and you will be understand it is bond what can not never be torn I believe other you know what I am talking about honey
