If you have 20 minutes or so to spare and want to truly appreciate the genius that was Freddie and Queen, watch their entire performance t the Live-Aid concert. One of the most intensely satisfying live performances I've seen. Supposedly David Bowie, watching from backstage, made the comment, "Now how am I supposed to follow THAT?"

Freddie has that “ I don’t give a crap what anyone thinks of me” attitude and it is so fantastic to watch. He was a born show man, and had the voice to match. I wonder sometimes what Queen would be like today if Freddie was still alive.

Roger Taylor doesn't get the respect/attention he should. A lot of those high notes are his and he does a great job of supporting Freddie. People often forget this is a four piece band each contributing quality songs and great musicianship. Not knocking the magnificence of Freddie, but there is more to Queen than just him.

I think the most important thing in case of Freddie is, that he was always authentic either as a singer, songwriter, musician or as a performer.
@craenor
@craenor 2 жыл бұрын
In addition to his authenticity, another big difference-maker for Freddie was the fact that with each performance, he was all-in; no reservations, no hesitation, no indecision. He was just fully committed, and that gives much of his stage performance that authenticity you write about, in a way that others would just look foolish trying to copy. I can't imagine being able to so fully master one's self-doubts.

Freddie's voice is ALWAYS the sound of the vocal in my head when I am writing a song! I think he is the BEST singer ever recorded by modern techniques in living-human history! He could sing low in the baritone range (maybe a bass note or two) all the way up into soprano and beyond while STILL having that "feel/power/mood" in his tone! NOBODY I know of compares!

Beth, you are becoming less and less a "vocal-coach" compared to becoming (more and more) a mega YT/social-media "personality"! IDK if you want it, but someday I bet you will be the host of a really cool show on one of the major networks. (I'd rather you just join an old-school punk rock band and try to glean fame that way... lol.) But, naw! Beth, you are destined for "big" fame! (Don't be like Alice! Don't lose your head!)

So true about Freddie and the half mic. In many other reaction videos, the reactor says something like ‘why is that guy not wearing shoes?’ Or ‘why does Freddie have so many beverages on the piano?’ Or ‘why is the lead singer wearing that weird outfit?’ My answer is the same every time: ‘When you’re Freddie Mercury, whatever you do, it works. He is simply that good.’

If you watched that entire concert, Freddie wore just shorts for the Encore songs. And a Montreal Canadiens hat for Another One Bites The Dust.
@jazzlefettie
@jazzlefettie 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnnyMegabyteCanada I’ve read that Freddie and his band mates were not pleased with how the videographers were handling things for the 2 nights of concerts in Montreal in ‘81. That company wanted the crowd to remain relatively calm and in their seats (not exactly how a typical Queen audience would act; I know cuz I was in some of them back in the day), and they wanted the band members to wear the same outfits each night and do the same movements on stage so they could splice the two nights together as needed for the final product. Queen didn’t like the idea of merging the two concerts together cuz they just wanted a film of each concert, as they happened, organically. As a form of protest, Freddie deliberately changed up his choreography each night. And he changed his outfits. And but just any change up-he decided to go back on stage in what he referred to as the most outrageous get up that he could come up with at the time, like going back out barefoot and bare-chested, and wearing white shorty shorts, a bandana neckerchief, and a Montreal Canadiens hat. Apparently the film company was not amused but they ended up with a final product that is still very popular to this day, 40+ years later!

Strangely, rumour has it that "power" was the reason for it. Queen (and Freddie in particular) were annoyed with the filmmakers (they'd subdued the crowd deliberately and "requested" the group wore the same costume on consecutive nights so they could cut between the two shows). Fred's clothes - or lack of them - were intended not only to spoil continuity but also to show the filmmakers who was boss.
